Free Francis Frith photos Ancestry.
« on: Friday 14 August 15 14:09 BST (UK) »

Just to let you know, Ancestry are allowing access to all the Francis Firth Photos for free.

Ever wondered what your local towns and villages looked like in Victorian times? Now you can find out with our UK City, Town & Village Photos, 1857‑2005. Access to this comprehensive colection is FREE until the end of August and includes more than 220,000 landscape and portrait images of 7,000 individual cities, towns, and villages across the UK.

This is a fantastic opportunity to see how the fashions and styles of Britain really evolved, not just what we see in period dramas. Discover the changing street scenes, from horse-drawn traffic replaced by motor vehicles, to old steam trains replaced by the British Rail. These images are extra special as they link to our Census and Parish records, letting you discover your ancestors through their old stomping grounds.

Just log in with your Ancestry account, or make a free one.

Cheers.

If you use the francisfrith.com, you will have to pay for the images.

Cheers.

Not sure of the definition of free?

Do you mean I have to pay to go onto FF and look at photos? Or are you suggesting the pictures can be downloaded from Ancestry without paying FF a fee? Or ordered from Ancestry via FF for free?

Not really sure I see a difference , but am happy to be corrected  :)

From comments on this on FB etc., I believe you can save images to your tree, but that is all.  You cannot download off Ancestry.   And as we all know, none of this gets added when using the GEDCOM.

I do find this whole thing rather odd as ALL the Francis Frith photos are copyrighted!!!

Presumably you can take a screen shot, though and "save" them that way?

Always looking for GOODWINS in Berkshire :)

Yup, if you press F11 when viewing the image (full size browser). Zoom the image to the size you need, and then take a screen shot. Normally the print screen button.

Paste it into your graphics program. You now have the image.

Cheers.

The places Ive looked at have very clear pictures and I have used the iPad to photograph them and then send to a few people.
Could spend ages looking at these....one of my places had over a hundred pictures.
Using the drop down boxes on the right make it quicker than filling in the form.
