Richard Moore, Supervisor of Excise, Belfast 1840s and 50s

Hello,
I am trying to find out more about Richard Moore, Supervisor of Excise, a son of my 4th great grandfather. Richard was the son of Capt John Moore RN who was Harbour Master in Galway and died in 1849. Richard married Sarah Amelia Rawlins on 10 Oct 1843. Going by Irish newspapers and the 1861 English census, their children were Margaret Ann born Feb 29 1844 in Swansea Wales, John born July 18 1845 in Belfast, Mary born Feb 19 1847 in Belfast, Sarah born 1850 in Ireland (Belfast?) and Alice born 1853 in Lambeth, England. The 1861 census has Richard's wife and children in Lambeth, but I can find no other traces of them anywhere. Any help in finding out more about this branch of my family would be most welcome and appreciated (I am not even sure what a Supervisor of Excise did - is it something to do with Customs or taxation?)

According to the births you've listed Richard Moore should have been in Belfast approx. 1844/45-1850/53 but I don't see his name in 1852 Belfast directory-

I did find this in the Belfast Newsletter (23 Feb.1847) but unfortunately just says 'Belfast' rather than street address-
BIRTHS On the 10th inst., at Belfast, the lady of Richard John Moore, Esq., Supervisor of Excise, of a daughter.

Thanks for that - I may have misread the 10th as the 19th in the case of Mary Moore's birth.
Anyway from what you found I guess it is safe to say that by 1851 they may have gone to England.

Excise Office, 31 Waring St.- Richard J. Moore (supervisor), Second District

Thank you. The J stands for John. The full name was Richard John Moore.

Yes, full name was in birth announcement I posted earlier.

Have you tried checking for him in Lambeth directories to see if you can narrow down date he might have left Ireland?

Just found he is still on Belfast in the 1850 directory.

Just remember that directories usually compiled and printed before the year date- thus, 1850 directory could have been put together and printed in 1849.
