Jane COLE b 1865 +/-1, Pennington
« on: Wednesday 12 August 15 21:01 BST (UK) »
Jane COLE, my great grandmother, was the youngest child of Richard and Jane (nee BRAN).  She was apparently born in Pennington in either 1864 or 1866 but I can find no birth registration for her.

I've done a search on Ancestry unsuccessfully.  Neither FamilySearch or FreeREG have any transcriptions for Pennington or Lymington where some of her siblings were born.

Richard was a sawyer. Jane (snr) died in 1866.

Can anyone help find young Jane or point me in the direction of any online resource please?

She ended up in Northants but I'm not worried about that at the moment.

Thank you for your reply.

I don't think either of those is her.  She had older sisters, Elizabeth and Eliza, although neither seem to have been at home in 1871.

I got in touch with a cousin.  Apparently there's a copy of a Certificate of Baptism dated 18 Jan 1931 which gives Jane's DoB as 16 Jan 1864, making her 67 when it was issued. She died 7 Apr 1936.

Out of interest, was the Jane BRAN born in 1824? If so I'm descended from her brother, James.

I have some Coles from Lymington in my tree, a John Wavel COLE, who married Martha READ. Their children were Adeline (b.1866, George b. 1850, Henry W b. 1856 & Emma E b. 1863). Probably doesn't help you much, but I sympathise about the lack of online resources for the area!

Yes, she was :D

Hallo cousin! :D

I haven't done much with the COLE family as yet. I'm not sure if I have the right family in 1841.

I've attached the BRAN family as far as I've gone at the moment. I'm still working on that.  The children shown in green are those I'm not sure of.  I'm pretty sure there's one missing, hence there being 5.

:D Great to meet you!!

I have a lot more information on the Brans - I've been trying to do a bit on their tree as well - a very interesting family, if you hear some of the local stories I got from my Grandfather...

I will keep it brief here, so we don't take the thread off topic, but I'll send you a PM with a lot more details.

I believe William and Ann were married in Kinson, Dorest. I think you can find the marriage record here: http://www.opcdorset.org/KinsonFiles/KinsonMars.htm

I believe they had 13 children:
William (1814)
Mary Ann (1815)
Elizabeth (1817)
Joseph (1819)
Robert (1821-1872)
John (1823)
Jane (1824)
Emma (1825)
James (1828-1909)
George (1831)
Edward(1834)
Susannah (also 1834?, probably 36)
Eliza (1837)

I didn't have Ann Alner's parents, so that is helpful.
Will drop you a PM anyhow

I contacted the Hants Register Office and it turns out Jane wasn't registered for some reason.

Registration wasn't compulsory until 1875?!

Before then, the onus was on the registrar to find births, and ensure they were registered.
