Narrowing down a search
« on: Monday 10 August 15 22:00 BST (UK) »
hi

general query

With roots chatters help have found a marriage in 1814 listed on two sites.  Both show witness names but not fathers, presumably they were not recorded on the original document.  Would this be unusual, or because maybe both were deceased and/or because it was out of their normal parish (?) - although they were both said to be residents of the village they were married in.

I've seen both. I've encountered banns where the father's name was given and he was listed as deceased and banns where no father's name was given.

Sorry that isn't really helpful!
;D Doing my best, but frequently wrong ;D
:-* My thanks to everyone who helps me, you are all marvellous :-*

at that time it was usual for no father's name to be included -just the names of the witnesses

Under Hardwicke's Marriage Act 1753, the information recorded in the register is the Parish, County, and year. the names of the bride and groom, the parishes they were from, the name of the Church, whether the marriage was by banns or licence, the consent of the parents if either of the couple were under the age of 21, the date of the marriage, the signature of the minister, the signatures of the couple and the signatures of the witnesses. Parents and Occupations are not shown.

As usual Stan a very comprehensive answer - thankyou to everyone though, I appreciate all your input.

My knowledge on births, deaths and marriages is growing by the day, but if parents were not on the marriage details how the heck do you find them?

In my tree I have a post-1837 marriage, where one the father is a nice, clear "not known"

Yes, the individual concerned was indeed illegitimate...

If this link works, it should take you to an image of a typical 1814 marriage certificate ....
