Wrights in Lockton 1891
« on: Monday 11 July 05 10:38 BST (UK) »
Help required please in searching for the above family. Alfred Wright was in the Royal Engineers Ordnance Survey Corps and with his wife Harriet, lived somewhere in the Lockton area of North Yorkshire. I would like to know where the barracks were, and if he and his family stayed there or were billeted in the town instead. At the time Alfred and his wife had 8 of their 11 or so children with them. Those missing are Alfred Thomas, James Ed., and two children not yet born.
Thankyou Sue

Hi Sue,
do you have when and where Alfred and Harriet were born.
Whats the names of the children that should be with them at the time of the 1891 census.

In 1891 they are at Cottage House, Lockton RG9 3992 F9
Alfred 44 Supt of Examiners Ordnance Survey b St Georges London
Harriet Susanna 41 b Frittenden
Sidney Arthur C 15 Tape boy Ordnance survey b Cornwall St Just in Penwith
Herbert Walter 13        "      "      "                   b Gerrans
Alice Mary 12  b St Newlyn East
Archie Wilfred 9 b Lanceston
Margaret Cowan 7 b Devon Dodbrooke
Annie Mabel 5               "    Chudleigh
Ada Beatrice 3   b Dorset Weymouth
Nellie May 1 b Yorks Pickering
They did move around a lot!   There are other Ordnance survey people also living in that group of houses.  The army is not mentioned at all.

Hi Andrea
You're a star!! Thanks for that info, I wonder if Alfred was part of the original Ordnance Survey team from which we get our modern day maps. He may have started in the Royal Engineers but once he had served his time was re- employed by Ordnance Survey. I know this particular government organisation did start from the Army.
In 1881/ 1901 there is another Wright family who were employed by the Ordnance Survey office in Bedford, rather strange to find two supposedly different families following the same occupation. Perhaps it is Alfred's older brother and his family. We shall see.

Best Regards Sue

Hi Caz

You have been pipped at the post by Sillgen I'm afraid but thanks for your interest in my family tree. The two boys I'm having difficulty tracing are, however, Alfred Thos (Thomas?) born Brede in Sussex c1871 and James Ed (Edward/Edwin?) born Withyham in Sussex c1873. Also, I don't know if Ada Beatrice born Weymouth in Dorset was still alive on 1901 census as I can't trace her.

The 2 boys do not seem to be on 1891 or 1901 census, Alfred would have been 20/30 and James would have been 18/28, any info would be extremely welcome :)

Best wishes Sue

Hi Caz

My, you have been very busy, and thankyou so much for the info you have provided.
I wonder if Alfred, like his younger brother Sidney, also went into the Boer War. Are there any records like Cwgc I could consult?
With regard to his possible death, I do know that there was a lot of TB during this time, although he could have been wounded in Boer War and shipped home on one of the many hospital ships. If it is him, how sad to die so young.
Ada Beatrice was indeed one of my relatives, a younger sister to my Great Grandfather Sidney. I Suppose it was inevitable that, amongst 11 children, there would be one at least who died in childhood.

Thankyou again for your kind assistance :) sue
