Caz, I’m sure the dedicated group of WAI fans would be delighted if you decided to give in to your urge. It was lots of fun, I’ve travelled miles all over the UK via Google street view. 😁😁😁 😘

This was the house that I thought I could recall in a picture showing convalescent WW1 soldiers.

But perhaps not.

Fantastic that the name has been found. ;D

I've been looking to see if this property was used as a convalescent home for WW1 soldiers. Can't seem to find anything.

Does anyone know?  or know where I can search please?

Good evening,

Well, i'm really miffed over this find Trish. I only live about 45 minutes away and have driven past it numerous times. Unknowingly of course, the road is just behind the trees on the left of the lawn. It has a 6ft stone wall alongside the road which is that much lower than the garden. So with all the trees you can't actually see it from the road. Not even as you pass the drive which goes in behind the house as we look at it. Well done again Trish.

Thanks again John. Next time you drive past No. 12 you’ll know what lurks behind the trees 😉
I’m not sure it would have been recognisable without the tower, so don’t be too hard on yourself  ;D

Of course, we have no idea when the house was altered. The first thing I noticed was the large building at the right rear. That has been replaced by a house on the same footprint. Also the tennis court has gone, the ground now slopes down from the terrace in front of the house. I tried researching it last night but couldn't find a lot about it. A search for a house of that name kept taking me to one in Hampshire. A search for Churt House, which it was known as at one time, kept taking me to Churt which is near Guildford. I am on a mission now to research this and also have another look for missing WAIs. But not today, off on a coach trip to Wisley Gardens.

It is interesting to follow the house and its occupants over time through newspapers.

A search for Churt House, which it was known as at one time

Still called Rotherhurst when Mr and Mrs G N Hillier-Holt leave in 1947.

"Lord and Lady Nathan, with the Hon. Roger Nathan, have moved from Old Kiln, Churt, to Churt House (formerly Rotherhurst), Rotherfield, near Tunbridge Wells"
Wednesday,  Apr. 7, 1948
Publication: The Times

Lord and Lady Nathan sold "Churt House" Rotherfield in 1960.

But it seems to revert to being called Rotherhurst again some time before 1970.

Also the body of a murdered girl was found there in 1991.
