Hampshire Herald
« on: Monday 03 August 15 21:21 BST (UK) »
My Husband has distant relatives who lived in the village of Froyle. I think the local newspaper was the Hampshire Herald and would like to know if there were any obituries published in the paper after their deaths. There are some Hampshire newspapers on Find My Past but the Hampshire Herald isn't one of them

Try the Reading Mercury,  a lot of my family who lived  very close to  Froyle, in Odiham, Alton and the surrounding areas had  obituaries and  BMDs, in the Reading Mercury.  Don't get fixated on local papers, even the smallest things were noted far and wide.

Thankyou Jebber, I have just searched the Reading Mecury and whilst their are articles about Upper Froyle there is no mention of the family I am looking for and as for many years they were Post Master and Post mistress of Froyle Post office and also Thomas Robinson being appointed Parish Clerk I would have expected there would have been a mention of them.

Depending on the time period concerned you are more like to find Froyle news in the Farnham Herald or Surrey and Hants News.

Have you visited www.froyle.com

Yes I have visited the website and got lots of information about the Robinson family from there, unfortunately neither the Farnham Herald or Surrey and Hants News has been uploaded to the Newspaper index on FindMyPast

The Hampshire Herald became the Alton Gazette and it is on film at Alton Library.
Have you not tried the Froyle village web site which has information on the Robinson family (if these are who you are trying to research) including notes from a family ledger, photo of Gerald (sadly his grandson died in 2013), memorial inscriptions, etc.
Never forget the village/town web sites or any local museums or local history societies. Many villages now have their own archives.

If you have a particular query - the Booths who run the Froyle web site might help - or I could go to Alton Library for you - but I would need a date. Finding a mention depends on if the village had a local reporter for the paper at that period but you might be lucky.

Hi Jane,
I have looked at the Froyle website and got information from there, but I am curious to know whether any members of the Robinson family had an obituary printed in the local paper, I would be extremely grateful if you could look for Thomas Robinson died 2nd March 1926, Harriet Robinson died 20th December 1908 and Richard Gerald Robinson who died 24th April 1929.
Thankyou
Joan

I will try and get to the Library next week. The usual was a description of a funeral and mainly for men. Yours Jane
