I wonder if certain makes of PCs and laptops are having more problems than others?  For instance, from what I've seen on line, owners of Toshiba PCs seem to be having problems.  My husband and I both have Lenovo, me a laptop, him a PC.  Everything is working, even though Lenovo hasn't, according to one site I saw, upgraded certain of its features to work with Windows 10.  ???

Good point - mine is a Sony Vaio and I've not had many problems.

Its less likely to be down to makes of PC and more likely connected to the types of hardware used by the individual PC manufactuers, may of which are likely to have been used across more than one model and make, and to the software installed.  This will have been one of the reasons that Microsoft setup the facility to have your PC checked via the reservation feature as it would then check for any issues and advise in advance of any potential problems that may mean you needed to delay the upgrade.  In spite of Microsoft having been using the Insider Program for some months to test the product, there are still a number of software manufactuers who haven't upgraded their programs yet and obviously the older the version of the software and/or hardware driver, the more chance there could be an issue.  Doesn't mean all older software could potentially be a problem, just that its more of a possibility.  This has, of course, happened in the past but then there wasn't a free update available to so many people. :-X  I know from reading this thread that a number of RCers have upgraded via the download and not the reservation facility without any issues, but with such a variety of software and hardware available across all the PCs illegible for the upgrade, it's not really surprising there have been issues.

Thanks for the explanation Smudwhisk, so in a way if it's down to the types of hardware used by individual PC manufacturers, then it's still more likely that PCs from certain manufacturers will have more problems than others.

Not necessarily, many of the parts are made by non-PC manufactuers who also sell them as parts to the public and not just to manufacturers.  I've just replaced the harddrive in my HP laptop, it was a Toshiba drive and had been playing up for some time.  My previous HP laptop originally had a Samsung drive.  I replaced them with either a Western Digital or Seagate drive, neither of which manufactuers PCs, just the parts.  So its probably the luck of the draw as to what part has been used in which PC at any one time by any manufactuer.  As they are all known for releasing new models fairly often, it doesn't mean they will necessarily use a part by the same manufactuer in each model.

My laptop (win 7), which I ugraded to Win 10 first was disasterous requiring a factory reset then starting again. Second time round Win 10 behaved and installed and behaved correctly.

My main pc (win 7) decided to download and install Win 10 all by itself even though I had windows updates registered as notify and allow me to install when I chose.  Thankfully, I had already done a backup earlier that morning.  Download, install were a dream and all working fine.

Both pc and laptop are Acer, I noticed that the laptop has had several updates since install before my pc upgraded itself. The pc arrived with the search box reduced to an icon.  Any bugs I have found a problem with, I have sent detailed feedback to MS.  Although after the initial install problem with the laptop, everything else has been acceptable.  But I must admit, some of the bugs found have been known about by MS for months!!!

Strange thing is, my pc has more software and additional hardware which I would have thought could have caused more problems than the laptop.

I left my PC upgrading overnight and was amazed to find everything working fine this morning and looking much as it did before. I had been using Stardock Start8 to make Win 8.1 emulate Win 7, and that still largely works with Win 10 but I have now upgraded that to Start10 ($3.99 for the upgrade, or $4.99 for a new install) and that works perfectly.

The upgrade had made Edge the default search engine and I've had to switch that back to Chrome. Otherwise this has been a very smooth transition.

Try doing what I did with a tablet. Do a manual Windows Update even though you may have automatic updates selected. After I did this and brought the tablet up to date, I went back to the Windows notification where I found it was ready to download and upgrade.
