It pays to check the settings often; some of the updates may reset them for you  >:(

Well, after faffing for 26 hours, I managed to backup the PC. Now, W10 recognised the external hard drive, then it doesn't, then it does, then it doesn't, then it does, etc etc. We had less faffin with Windows 95, and I had 3 birthdays during that "faffin" time.

Regards

Malky, who cannot go into reverse at this time. (Can't back up)  ;D ;D ;D

has anyone had a trouble free update to Win 10??

I.e pressed the "Go" button and had all their old thing working without having to spend hours/  days/ rest of their natural life tweaking this, reinstalling that, buying new compatible software, replacing peripherals because drivers no longer work etc etc etc

I've had loads of updates since I upgraded to Windows 10, not had any problems with any of them.

has anyone had a trouble free update to Win 10??

I have updated a 5 year old win 7 laptop and a Win 8.1 desktop and everything was working as before including third party internet security, wifi printer, scanner, external harddrives (which were unplugged during update) and all my software. All updates since appear to have installed without me noticing.

During the installation I did not select the rather prominent "Default installation" settings button, but selected the barely readable tiny font "customise settings" selection tucked away on the opposite side of the screen at the bottom.

All I've really had to do is customise the start menu ie deleting all the superfluous live apps, and reduced the search box on the taskbar to a small button.

Having trawled through the Win 10 complaints, it seems that it "W10" has a problem with USB3 connections. It seems from reading posts from others, with USB3 boards and ext' hard drives, they also are having problems.
How long has USB3 been on the go?? I think that someone should tell Microsoft about them.

Regards

Malky

Simon, how did you do that.  I have a large box on the taskbar with the words "Search the web and Windows", yet on my husband's PC (he upgraded from 7 to 10 yesterday), he just has a search icon.

This is a BT site to go to once you've got Windows 10 installed.  It is a list of 10 things to do after you upgrade your computer to Windows 10, with instructions how to carry them out.

Right click on a clear area of the task bar
Move mouse  to Search and three options come up
1. Hidden
2. Show search Icon
3.  Show search box
