THIS PC is staying WIN 7!!! I have far too much important stuff on here.  It will stay that way until I buy a new pc.

It seems those who are going from Win 8 to Win 10 are having a smoother transition.
Having read a lot- and thanks to all who have contributed- and being of a mind that if it aint broke why fix it change it or upgrade it, then I think I will do as you.

Its not about importance of materials , its not that I don't like change, its not that I am a grumpy old man ( well maybe) , I guess if I am honest with myself I resist being told that something is good for me and its a must have and I will be left behind if I don't have it.

I drive an old car because I know what all the noises are. I used XP and use  W7 because I know where the buttons are. I will eventually learn where the buttons on W10 will be - when I choose to use it

Thank you once again for everyones comments - they are neither good nor bad but your experiences and thoughts and I thank you for those.  :)

Well, I didn't actually lose any files on the upgrade, everything stayed put. I also backed everything up too.  What I really meant is that I didn't want to risk having to do another factory reset and reinstall my programs. I have more on this pc. I also do not want to spend hours going back redoing all the old updates before I get to the point that the pc is up-to-date ready for Win 10.

Please acknowledge when a restorer works on your photos, it can take hours for them to work their magic

Please scan at 300dpi minimum to help save the restorers eyesight.

Jim, tried a manual backup last night. It failed due to "hardware error." Strangely, the drive has no errors, and there is some new data on it. God only knows what is going on. I wish he would tell me!!

Further :- Unusual condition was encountered during finalization of a backup cycle for configuration.

Having tweaked around with WIN 10 after an 'in-place' upgrade on WIN 7 I decided to do a 'Clean Install' via the Media Creation Tool after downloading Win10 again .....

I offered it a squeaky clean brand new Samsung SSD - which 'INStall' rejected with an error message that qualified for top Mumbo-Jumbo of the decade - summat about GPT disks and MBRs ..... back in WIN 10 I formatted the drive again  ... same error ... physically moved the disk to a WIN 7 PC and formatted, clipped & wiped with my Mini-Tool Partition Wizard - back to the original PC and booted the USB drive and this time INSTALL sailed thru .....

.... but bringing up WIN 10 this time to personalize was fraught with NVidia Driver issues, and even some AMD Divers for the 6-core PC were downlevelled ...

Finally, some features that had worked OK on the original upgrade to WIN 10 were kaput - eg 'File History' said there were no available drives to use (same population of 2 SSDs and an old SATA 160Gb as before)  ... also Windows Defender, aka MS Security Essentials wont show its Icon in the Tray ..... and a couple of other things ...

Something I had not ever experienced on WIN 7 ... this iteration of WIN 10 placed a folder in 'This PC' with the Admin's Username of my old WIN 7 PC (which was at that time in 'SLEEP') - curiousity demanded I click on it in File Explorer - it brought the other PC out of SLEEP !

Lots to understand still !

I've given up!
W10 installed itself Thursday. Everything seemed OK but I couldn't get FTM2014 to work (except in pedigree mode) so I have reverted to W7.
I'll probably go back to 10 when Ancestry have fixed it.

Have you got another drive you can back up to?

Ancestry recommend using Chrome or Firefox for the time being.

I've got FTM2014 running without any dramas.

The only program that doesn't work (as far as I can see) on my system is Microsoft Money.   This seems to require components of IE6 !!

Ancestry (on the web) is not currently supporting Microsoft Edge, which seems strange given the notice that Microsoft had given regarding the launch of Win10.

Well after 1hr and 20minutes Windows 10 installed with no problem? Touch wood. :D
[I would imagine the problems - set backs - will manifest over the coming weeks.]

What I forgot to mention: For those who have a battery dependant machine, put your machine onto mains power (charge) because the update can take a couple of hrs or more depending on download speed!
I have trouble ..... I would have expected the my contacts list would have been imported too and it is tedious having to start all over again setting up a new list.
There must be a way ....... does anyone know?
