I had to get a new laptop a few weeks ago due to sudden death of previous one. It came with windows 8.1 and a reservation for windows 10. I reinstalled all the software I had on my old Visa laptop on the new one. (With exception of familytree maker which is not compatible with windows 8.1). Today I checked compatibility of the remaining software with windows 10 and find my version of Microsoft Office isn't compatible, my FTP file upload software says "no information" and my antivirus/ internet security software isn't compatible. This last is particularly annoying as we have recently renewed a three pc licence for three years  for my laptop and OH's laptop and desk top.

Several other features are missing, the most annoying being DVD player

http://uk.pcmag.com/operating-systems-and-platforms/42383/feature/6-features-disappearing-in-windows-10-and-how-to-r

Has anyone else faund that software working on win 7 or Win 8 no longer works on Win 10.

Re MS Office - although the official line is that only newer versions of Office are compatible with Windows 10 older versions do work within it ( I had Office 2000 working on a W10 laptop)

re "journalists" and their list articles ..........

Bullguard. It is antivirus, firewall, PC optimisation and a few other things.

After I updated from a 7 and a 8.1 machine, Bullguard was sitting there running perfectly well (with Defender and the Windows firewall off). So no worries here either.

If anybody else ended up with a 'Dual Boot' (ie WIN 10 and your previous WIN7/8/8.1) & you want to eliminate the old one, and cant find the WIN 7/8/8.1 'System Configuration' tool to let you edit the Boot options  ..... use MSCONFIG.exe in an Admin-level CMD prompt & the old tool appears !

Gawd knows why they've hidden it - away from Control Prog / System or the new SETTINGs thingy in WIN 10 !

Or just type MSCONFIG.exe into the search box. Not sure how that's different from Win7?

I had a play for 5-10 minutes once i downloaded windows 10 but something nagged at me! I've no volume! Although its cured a few minor problems. No audio device installed it says and looking at the speaker icons there is a cross by them. I know its done it to others. The best thing is i've got iplayer and the new windowd dvd player but no use cos i can't hear them. Although like i say its worker better other than that. The laptop is 4 years old. Funny enough went into tesco at the weekend other computers were on advertising windows 10 but not the toshiba model!  Can't see anythin on the websites but put messages on microsoft , computer active and toshiba.

Help please.   If I reserve the Free edition of W10, will it download automatically.
Can I choose when to install it myself.

I`m not sure I`m ready yet . Need to check  whether printer / scanner etc will work on 10
Thanks

Its very different - SYSTEM CONFIG itself (w/o the need to use MSCONFIG) is easily found in WIN 7, to get to the Boot options menu ...

@Wilcoxon - it depends on your Windows Update settings if it will download the 2.99Gb automatically, or invite you to download ..... after that its your choice when to install - all prompted by WIN UPDATE ...

I think typing msconfig.exe into the search box was the most familiar way of bringing this up in Win7. However if you want to go in through the Control Panel just type 'Control Panel' into the search box, you can then select your familiar Control Panel then select Sytem Configuration from there if that's the way you like to access it. If you pin the Control Panel to the Start Menu (or even the Task bar or desktop), then to get to it will be identical to Win7.

I had Windows Update set to update automatically. The download happened before I could stop it but it failed. It then got stuck in a loop trying to download and preventing other updates from installing. I followed some suggestions on the Microsoft website which eventually resulted in my having to use System Restore in safe mode. I've now cancelled my reservation and won't be getting Windows 10 unless it's preloaded on a new machine !
