Windows 10 - The Eagle has landed!

Lizzie , as I understand it , most people are upgrading from 7. To me 8 to 10 doesn't seem that big a leap. For me I resisted 8 because I felt it was aimed at the kids and the KardCashitins generation.

I don't want apps. Give me files give me sauce on my sausages.

I guessed it was Windows 7 to 10 which was the big leap.

I had no choice but to get Windows 8.  My other laptop started acting up so rather than lose everything we bought a new one.  Windows 8 had just been introduced and, unless I wanted to pay a lot of extra money to get Windows 7 (I had Vista), then it was easier just to go with Windows 8.  I was very apprehensive but once I'd got it sorted to my liking all was well.

I agree, Lizzie. Apart from a few minor hiccups, things went smoothly and I haven't really noticed much difference.

There are so many people on line (I don't mean on Rootschat) complaining about problems upgrading that I can't believe I didn't have any problems.  There's even a story (which I don't believe) of a man who set his PC to upgrade to Windows 10 overnight, his wife was first down the following morning and found all his porn (which he'd stored in "My Pictures") had been turned into a slideshow.

How come my pictures were exactly where they were on Windows 8.1?  The only thing was Microsoft wanted me to open them with their Pictures app, but I changed it so they open as I want them to, not as Microsoft want me to.

I think it is like a lot of new things or updates, for some reason people would like them to fail or cause problems. You get a lot of people who haven't tried it complaining and saying how awful it is, repeating horror stories and saying how they would never upgrade. I don't think people can comment until they have given it a chance, then if they have problems or can't get on with it they are free to give their opinion.

I had to get a new laptop a few weeks ago due to sudden death of previous one. It came with windows 8.1 and a reservation for windows 10. I reinstalled all the software I had on my old Visa laptop on the new one. (With exception of familytree maker which is not compatible with windows 8.1). Today I checked compatibility of the remaining software with windows 10 and find my version of Microsoft Office isn't compatible, my FTP file upload software says "no information" and my antivirus/ internet security software isn't compatible. This last is particularly annoying as we have recently renewed a three pc licence for three years  for my laptop and OH's laptop and desk top.

Several other features are missing, the most annoying being DVD player

Has anyone else faund that software working on win 7 or Win 8 no longer works on Win 10.

What antivirus are you using? As I've said previously on a post re Windows 10, my AVG vanished, but I was able to retrieve it by going to their site, updating and doing a repair. I would have thought that well known antivirus software companies will make their product compatible, otherwise they could go out of business.

Bullguard. It is antivirus, firewall, PC optimisation and a few other things. We have used in on a succession of PC's and laptops and been very happy with it. We have tried Norton and Macafee in the past but they have given problems with some programmes - although Norton was back in the days of Win 3.1 and 95. MacAfee prevented me from opening word documents, which I knew were virus free because I had created them myself a few hours or days  before.

If anybody else ended up with a 'Dual Boot' (ie WIN 10 and your previous WIN7/8/8.1) & you want to eliminate the old one, and cant find the WIN 7/8/8.1 'System Configuration' tool to let you edit the Boot options  ..... use MSCONFIG.exe in an Admin-level CMD prompt & the old tool appears !

Gawd knows why they've hidden it - away from Control Prog / System or the new SETTINGs thingy in WIN 10 !
