You can access Win7 backup process in the usual way from the control panel.

Seems something similar to what I was experiencing with my  OH's laptop.  Kept getting the old Win 7 background and the start button would alternate between Win 7 and Win 10    Win 7 kept seeping through the Win 10 overlay.

I ended up doing a factory restore of the operating system, which put everything into a backup folder then went back to the very beginning.... 300 updates later I got the invite to upgrade to 10 back. They lied! you still get the invite after 29th! I had also created a Win 10 CD, just in case I didn't get the invite.
Anyways... I upgraded again last night from initial download to the end took about 1hr 30mins.  No horrible message "This is taking longer than expected" that I got last time.

It still stuck on opening Win 10, and wouldn't let me search or get anything from the start button.  Forced restarted and all is well now.  I've been able to add a Microsoft account to both users accounts. Windows 7 backgrounds are no longer there. I seem to have lost/mislaid my photoshop elements CD  so that hasn't been loaded. Office and all the other programs survived the journey.  I can still access all the backup folder etc.,  I suppose I shall have to put the printer drivers on their so that I can print via the network.  That will be the next step! SIL who has Win 8 has been playing with it this morning and showing me some of the Win 8 tricks.

Whether I could have gotten out of the mess without doing a factory reset, I don't know but I got fed up with trying to sort it out and I had nothing to lose with the laptop.

THIS PC is staying WIN 7!!! I have far too much important stuff on here.  It will stay that way until I buy a new pc.

It seems those who are going from Win 8 to Win 10 are having a smoother transition.

That would be OK if I had any Windows 7 backups left. But Windows 10 deleted them. Don't ask me why or how, but my external hard drive was wiped clean. There are now files realting to Windows 10 backup on said the hard drive. My LaCie hard drive desktop manager was working last night, prior to last night's Windows 10 updates. Now, it just sits in my desktop whistling tunes.
Good olde microsoft. Thank goodness we still have 2 in Windows 7 and 1 in XP.

Did you leave the external hard drive attached to the pc when you did the upgrade or did the hard drive get wiped after the upgrade?

Unless the external hard drive was reformatted, the files should still be recoverable.  I can't remember the program to download  that can analyse the drive to see if it can find anything.  I km

I have the program and equipment which can recover corrupted files on a hard drive or read damaged hard drives. This was wiped "clean". Strangely enough, it's a USB3 unit, connected to a USB3 card. The card was working at first, but now, W 10 does not like it. I have dropped it to USB 2.1 until I can get the "3" sorted out. It's just been a missmash of one problem after another. I have just checked the backup, and it did not complete at the last attempt.

From the control panel you will see the Win7 backup schedule so you'll know it will back it up next time.

It seems those who are going from Win 8 to Win 10 are having a smoother transition.

Much to my surprise my transition from 7 to 10 went incredibly well. I had copied all my docs, pics, etc to an external drive to be on the safe side but once the install was complete I had all my programs and data intact. In fact everything was exactly as it had been on 7, even down to the positions of my desktop icons and the desktop wallpaper. Even Norton was up and running, although I had to register the new system in my Norton a/c. My O/H didn't even have to do that on her laptop, which also upgraded smoothly from Win 7.

Maybe we were both just lucky . . . which in itself is unusual 

I imagine most of the reported problems are due to particular combinations of software and hardware.

Mike I upgraded from 8.1 to 10 and thought I must be the only person who had a smooth ride.  Like you, everything was exactly as it had been on 8.1 down to the positions of the desktop icons and desktop wallpaper. 

Perhaps if we're that lucky we should try our hand at the Lottery.

I only had a couple of minor problems, which I could sort quickly and easily, which was just as well as I'm not that technically minded!
