Emma Hadfield of Eccles
« on: Wednesday 29 July 15 15:36 BST (UK) »
Hello I am looking for the above young lady who was transported for 7 years in 1847, she said she was 21.

The only likely ones I can find in 1841 are under 10 not 16 as she should be.

The only other thing I know is that she had a sister Alice in Manchester

The young lady may have fibbed about her age or the age on the census wasn't accurate.

Is Eccles where she was transported from or was that her birthplace do you know?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

She said her "native place" was Eccles, she was tried at Salford Sessions.

Rosie sorry I don't know what newspaper report you mean.

Very few of those transported to Australia ever returned as far as I can ascertain.

Thanks  ;D

As that thread is also current and more active I'll wait and see what information it brings up before I look for anything else. It is silly to waste time looking for things others on another web site may have already found.  ;)

The newspaper reference to Emma Hadfield under the heading Salford Sessions was in Manchester Courier on 8th September 1847.  Her name was under the section titled 'Transported 7 years' but where the others had their age mentioned she did not. The only other information was that she had stolen a sovereign from Richard Smith at Salford.

Sorry Rosie I didn't realise I was breaching protocol by trying to cover all sources, I like to be thorough in my research.

I already have the news clipping for stealing a sovereign from Richard Smith but thank you anyway :)

Hi BarbW

No need to apologise  :)

I am just taking a break to see what information comes up on your other post, there is nothing worse than spending time on a search and then finding it has already been duplicated on another thread elsewhere.  ;D

  :D Hi There,

this info I found might be of some help to you regards Emma Hadfield from convict records of

 Australia

Emma Hadfield b 1825 occupation servant age 22 years

She was sentenced to 7 years for stealing a Soveriegn from a Mr Smith she

Sailed on the"  Elizabeth & Henry  ship" Feb 1848 arriving Van Demons Land 30th June 1848

I have also checked the Baptism  records in the  Parish church   " Eccles   " but no mention of her

 being baptised there

Lots of Hadfields there marriages baptisms but not her

I checked the spelling also HADFIELD also HATFIELD as  spelling mistakes quite common I know

Eccles     well  I was born and bred there
