The Gallweys of County Waterford (?)
« on: Monday 27 July 15 19:51 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking for some help tracking down a Gallwey family that was living in County Waterford in the latter part of the nineteenth century. All I've been able to find from newspapers, censuses and other sources is the initial of their first names.

There were two men: H.J. Gallwey and W. Gallwey
and two women (both single): A. Gallwey and F. Gallwey

They might not have been natives of County Waterford, but were certainly in Tramore in the summer of 1877.

Could anyone help in identifying any of these people?

Thanks,

J.

Hello and welcome.

Which censuses do you have these people in?
Are there clues re occupations or possible ages?
There are Gallweys in Tramore area so it is likely that they are from Waterford.
There is a probate entry, for example, for Henry Joseph Gallwey, 1912.
It is best to give any useful information you have collated to help others in the search.

Regards
Heywood

Were your people Wine Merchants?
Have you checked Irish Census, 1901 and 1911?

Hi, Heywood,

Thanks for your replies. I think your Henry Joseph Gallwey might well be one of the people I'm looking for. The family might well have been wine merchants.

I can't remember exactly, but it was probably one of the newspapers available in the British Newspaper Archive that I originally found the family's name in. I also looked in places like Burke's "A genealogical and heraldic history of the landed gentry of Ireland", but to no avail.

And nary a first name! Annoying, isn't it?

J.

There are various entries in censuses 1901 and 1911. You can search here http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie

Conahycalling has given you one example.

And has now added more  :)

Thanks,

Unless I'm wrong the F. Gallwey I'm looking for was a "Miss" and had a sister, "Miss A. Gallwey". They were probably in their twenties circa 1880.

Hi, again,

I think I mentioned in my original post that I had searched the Irish censuses, but to no avail.

This reads as though you have censuses with initials.

Henry Joseph's probate mentions William so they may well be HJ and W.
Would you like to share the 1877 information? It sounds as though it may be a newspaper report of people attending a funeral.
