WORTHINGTON family ? Bradford area
« on: Sunday 26 July 15 22:32 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help trying to locate members of the Worthington family possibly still living in the Bradford area?

In June 1944 Sergeant Hendry Worthington was killed in an accident in Colchester North Essex when the Bren Gun carrier he was travelling in with a military convoy blew up.

A road on a new housing estate is to be named after him and this is the reason we are trying find family members.

In June of this year an article was published in the Bradford Telegraph and Argus arranged by my friend who is leading the search for the family. Link here:

http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/news/13316784.Appeal_to_find_relatives_of_Bradford_soldier_after_street_named_after_him/

All we know is that he is buried at Undercliffe cemetery Bradford, that his wife was called Margaret who lived in Greengates at the time of the incident. His parents were Christopher and Margaret Worthington.

Sgt Worthington's unit was part of 11th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers

Thanks for looking.

Hi STAN54

Death: Henry Worthington born abt 1913 Death Colchester June Q 1944

Possible parents marriage and maiden name of his mother
Christopher Worthington & Margaret Collins @ Wigan March Q 1913

Possible birth for Hendry: note no "d" this could be a misstranscription, typo etc..
Henry Worthington @ Wigan June Q 1913 mothers maiden name Collins

Possible siblings for Hendry with mothers maiden name Collins
Agnes Worthington @ Wigan Dec Q 1914
Marion Worthington @ Wigan June Q 1920
Mary C Worthington @ Wigan March Q 1923
Margaret M Worthington @ Wigan Dec Q 1925
John J Worthington @ Wigan June Q 1929
~~~~~~~~---
Possible marriage for Hendry: note again no "d" - searched 1929-1944
Henry Worthington to Margaret Connolley @ Bradford Dec Q 1936
Possible child:
Christopher A Worthington @ Bradford Dec Q 1941 mothers maiden name Connolley
Possible marriages for child above:
Christopher Worthington & Louise Macfarlane @ Manchester Dec Q 1972
Christopher Worthington & Tracey L Dobb @ Mansfield June Q 1977
Christopher Worthington & Caroline L Jones @ Bolton Dec 1992
Note: none of the above have the initial "A" noted, this does not mean none are him.
I cannot find any death reg for this person above either.
It is possible Hendry's wife Margaret remarried, there are a lot of marriages for a Margaret Worthington making it difficult to ascertain.
Also upon another marriage the child Christopher A Worthington may have had his surname changed to that of his stepfather.
Possible remarriage: A large amount in same name all over, but this is the only one in locality:
Margaret Worthington to Denis D Jones @ Bradford Dec Q 1947
Possible birth for Denis D Jones @ Prestwich, Lancs Dec Q 1918 mothers maiden name Dawson
If the remarriage above is correct then any children born to her and Jones were not born in Bradford, too many to ascertain.
Tis bedtime for me, but maybe someone else can help to find the child Christopher A Worthington or to track children from Hendry's siblings, his nephews and neices
I have sent you a PM Stan...
Thanks for all the information you've found Wendy. I suppose it's possible that there was a typo with 'Hendry' and 'Henry' but we'll see.
I'll relay the info to Vic and we'll have a sift through and see where we go from here.
Thanks again,
Stan.
Hi Stan
I think Hendry was a nickname as his death is noted as Henry.
I have tried to find Christopher A Worthington on 192.com but there are several, some have ages to rule out but others don't and some don't have the middle initial A.
I have grandson today, but later I will see what I can find for Hendry's siblings and any possible children and see where that leads too.
I appreciate that this is four years after the event but I believe Hendry (Harry) is my grandfather.
During the weekend I was going through some old papers from my nan and found a letter Harry wrote to her during the war.  At the top was his service number which I then searched for in the Commonwealth War Graves commission web site and from there put in a google search for his name and came up with these posts.
After Harry died my nan, Margaret remarried Denis Jones and Denis adopted my dad Christopher who took his surname.  Denis was from the Cheetham Hill area of Manchester and the moved across the Pennines and lived in various places over the years.  My dad joined Manchester police where he met my mother Valerie in 1965. They had two children, me and my sister, and we eventually moved down to Devon in the early seventies.
My grandparents eventually followed us down and Margaret passed away in 1981. Denis had a good long life passing away in 2006 but my dad sadly passed away in 1998.  Amazingly he also died on 6 June which is same date Harry did and the same date of the story in the newspaper!
I always knew that Denis had adopted my dad but the story passed down was that Harry had been lost at sea? My wife is from West Yorkshire and with my mother's side from Manchester we have maintained some connections with the north.
I'm not sure what happened with the street naming in Colchester but I have looked up the cemetery and will get in touch with them.
