That's brilliant, thanks very much.

I've slightly altered the 'centre' of the map so that it links in with one I've got further south so that I can join the two together.

This has puzzled me for some considerable time now, why didn't I think of asking on here.  Doh!!!

Downloaded the map and using that counting up from the west end, off Bourne Walk, I can see which house my ancestor occupied then looking at the photo I can identify pretty well which house was his.  Brilliant.

Now all I need to do is find Bourne Passage which was also demolished in the clearances.

So far I can't see it on the Old-Maps site as not being a subscriber I can't zoom in enough.  Any thoughts please.

If I can find that then I've got where he lived from 1871 to 1901 on maps and photos, post that he was in Lewes running a pub which I also have.

Oh I'm so thick, just checked the first map I downloaded and there is Bourne Passage near the top including a Providence Cottage which might help me identify the actual house using the census entries. 

I do wish my two brain cells would occasionally talk to one another, would make life so much easier!

The council minutes show that a compulsory purchase order was made on the 23rd March 1934 for 8 Union Row as part of the Bourne Clerance.  Bourne Passage was also part of that scheme but later in 1936/37.  Unfortunately the war intervened, so after some demolition things were left till late 1950's and the 1960's

Hi Again

Bourne Passage ran between Bourne Road and All Saints Street - it was a continuation of Roebuck Street, but obviously a passage rather than a street.

Incidentally I have a picture of Union Row and a copy of the Official map that was used by the then planning dept to show all the demolition areas especially Bourn Passage..   They are to big to post on here, but if you send me you e-mail by private message, I will send you a copy

It's funny how you can batter your head against a brick wall over someone and then suddenly the wall falls down, in my case by a series of fortuitous coincidences and I now have a lot of info on two ancestors who ran the Alma Tavern and the King's Head in Hastings in the 1800s plus where they lived in-between times.
