Hannah Dowler and Samuel Smart born in Worcestershire, England

Hello

I am tracing my 4th x great grandmother Hannah Dowler born 1816 in Worcestershire. Parents I believe to be Samuel Dowler born abt 1795 in Dudley and Ann born 1796 in Dudley.

Hannah I believe married Samuel Smart on 5th April 1835 at Sedgley, Staffordshire. And is listed on the 1841 census at Upper Netherton, Dudley.

Samuel Smart born about 1811 in  Worcestershire, parents unknown.  I have contacted those researching Smart in this geographical area.  No replies yet

My 3 x great grandmother Mary Ann Smart was born in 1836 in Dudley, she went onto marry George Hudson.  Likewise, I have contacted all persons researching Hudson and Hutson

Any advice or information would be great.

The transcription on Freereg gives 19 Jan 1851 St Edmunds Dudley
Samuel Smart widower miner Dudley s of James Smart nailor and Harriet Bradley spinster d of Richard Bradley sawyer .Witnesses Rhoda and Joseph Bradley.

Burial for Harriet at Netherton 27.6.1882 age 59.
Samuel 27.1.1884 Netherton age 62.

Got  Samuel's parents James Smart married Syndonia Shaw 25.1.1802 at Kingswinford and Sam.l was baptised at dudley St T 30.8.1812.
Siblings James 11.7.1802,Nancy 27.10.1805,Joseph 25.10.1807 and Rosanna 7.5.1815.


The last gives his occupation as nailor from Baptist End which is in the Netherton area.

Sidonia buried Netherton 1.5.1856 age 76.

Can't see them on the census though.

There's a possible baptism for Samuel to Joseph and Pheobe Dowler 26.8.1792 at St Thomas Dudley.
A bit late to fit with the burial but better with the census.

Wow Ciderdrinker I have spent a few hours on this and its amazing !!!

Just a few queries.

Regarding "Burial for Harriet Smart at Netherton 27.6.1882 age 59 and Samuel Smart 27.1.1884 Netherton age 62 is this at St Thomas? Also was "Sidonia Smart buried Netherton 1.5.1856 age 76 was this St Thomas?

I read that "Samuel Dowler married Ann Wilkes at Dudley St T 24.12.1815 wit Samuel Paskin and Peter Massey and the Burial for Samuel 15.8.1858 age 70 at Netherton and also Nancy 24.8.1856 age 66 Netherton, Was this St Thomas?

Also I assume the "Ann Wilkes" who married Samuel Dowler was known also as Nancy? Any supporting documents?

Most of this I got from Freereg which does transcriptions of the parish records.
Harriet and Samuel Smart were both buried at St Andrew Netherton.So was Sidonia Smart.
Ann Wilkes would have been called Nancy as a pet name.
Again she and Samuel Dowler were buried at Andrews Netherton.
Netherton seems very popular in your family tree.

Thanks very much for the confirmation.  As I am on my last days visit to the area I did have the chance to pay a brief visit to St Andrews at Netherton this afternoon to take a few photos.  Its a shame I didn't have a burial plot map to attempt to find any grave stone or burial plot.

Catching up to this thread late - Syndonia was recorded in 1841 and 1851 with Ann BUNN born c.1805 - presumably christened 27 Oct 1805 at Dudley St Thomas as Nancy SMART. Ann married Jeremiah BUNN 5 Sep 1824 Dudley St Thomas (Groom OTP bachelor, bride OTP spinster, by banns, witnesses S PASKIN, Jos'h LAVENDER). Jeremiah BUNN was alive in 1841 but not 1851. The BUNN household was neighbouring Samuel SMART b.c.1811's household in 1851.

Thanks Peter and sorry for the late reply.  Nancy or Ann Bunn Nee Smart was my 5th Great Aunt.  The information helped me also add Sindonia on the census, she been my 5th Great Grandmother.

I hope to visit Dudley and Netherton again this year and try to trace if possible a few Smart and Hudson headstones to add to my tree.
