That will be the reason and probably mistranscribed on BTs as Andley.

Amazing - and I couldn't find it on the Diocese of Chester Burials because I had specified "Astbury".  And the surname is clearly Audley on the parish record.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Wow; Well when I asked the question I did not realise I would get such a response.

The information I put in my question came from Findmypast, which contains three references to the burial that took place on 6th September 1829, one of the references is referred to as 'parish register' and the other two are referred to as Bishop's transcripts. The 'parish register' reference refers to her as Sarah Audley and the two 'bishop's transcript' references refers to her as Sarah Andley.

I have used both FindmyPast and Ancestry and find that both these websites contain a lot of miss transcriptions and Audley is regularily miss transcribed as Andley on both websites. This has has in my opinion has occured in this case.

Should I have mentioned these miss transcriptions in my original message? I assumed that is someone went on to FindmyPast and searched for Sarah Audley burial 1829 one would find the entry, and doing that search the resulting image has the word pauper in brackets under Congleton in the abode column.

I know no more information about this Sarah Audley.

I am related to an Audley family but the earliest I can get back to is a burial in 1794 in Shotwick (the other side of Cheshire) and have hit a brick wall.

Using Findmypast my aim is to look at baptisms, marriages and burials of people with the surname Audley who were alive sometime between 1700 and 1800 to see if that provides a link to my branch of the family.  I know there are a number of references to the Audley surname in Nantwich and Macclesfield areas, which I cannot link to my branch of the Audley family

I was hoping that being a pauper may have been useful, but I discovered that Arclid workhouse In Congleton was not built until after 1829.  As she was aged 70 when she was buried I had sort of assumed she was married and therefore I could not find her marriage as I do not know her maiden name. I suppose I was hoping that someone would say as a pauper she would have been receiving parish relief and more information can be found at .............

I see that garstonite has made reference to the burial of a Sarah Audley in 1809, I agree that could be the burial of her mother, but how do I prove it as there is no age given as far as I can see for the Sarah buried in 1809.

In conclusion I was hoping that the fact that she was recorded as being a pauper would link to a new source of information for me to follow

Please accept my apologies for not responding sooner I have been painting the hall all day and just managed to get my hands clean enough to open the computer.

Thanks for all your help

Regards

Hi,
Thanks for getting back to us, hope we didn't interrupt your decorating too much  ;D
There is a Rootschat member, Brian Audley.
He has done a lot of research into the Audley... with all it's variations ....surname and has a very good website.
You can find him on this link and hopefully you will find something pertaining to your own Audley family.

Hi Rolnora,
Thanks for the link to the other Rootschat member I have looked at his  website and it looks very interesting. I will now contact him through his website and see if he can help.

I must admit garstonite's suggestion has got me thinking Is it really possible to construct a reliable family tree only using parish records particularly if they moved from one parish to another. For instance the earliest person in my Audley family tree was buried at Shotwick in 1811 (with no age specified) my best guess (from the age at death of his son) is that he would have born around 1750 with no idea as to where he was born (I am currently hoping it was somewhere in Cheshire otherwise I am barking up the wrong tree). This would mean he would have been about 9 years older than the Sarah Audley who died a pauper at Congleton in 1829 but they died 40 miles apart. Can one do anything more than speculate as to any possible relationship between them?

Many thanks for all the comments to my original message, they have given me much food for thought particularily I  wonder how reliable a family tree it is possible to construct from parish registers

... wonder how reliable a family tree it is possible to construct from parish registers

I think a lot of that depends on whether they were all from one area and stayed there. And how good the records are. Although not confirmed by any other sources I managed to get 4 generations back on one branch purely from parish records, finding number of children born to a couple, then a marriage a year or so before the first baptism etc. I was surprised at the time but it looks really good and I've not found any other likely partners in the area; I'm sure it would be a lot more difficult if they moved around :)
