1883 Marriage Look-up, Leicester All Saints (I think / hope!)
« on: Sunday 19 July 15 23:28 BST (UK) »
My Gibson's - also known as Clarke - continue to drive me insane!

William Clarke married either Fanny Goodwin or Fanny Flowers in the second half of 1883.  In 1891 they appear to be living in Cross Cumberland Street, All Saints so I'm hoping that's where they married.

If anyone has access to these records I'm hoping that William names his father as Benjamin, and if so would appreciate details of which Fanny he married.

From the census they don't seem to have had any children until almost 10-years later, which is another puzzle, so if there are any baptisms and/or burials then that would be a bonus.

Many thanks in advance.

Have you seen the 1911 census? We are not allowed to post details on here but I would be looking for a marriage a little later on FreeBMD c 1886 and leaving the 'e' off Clark.
Sorry - this adds another contender  :)

I know I should be grateful, and I am really (honest!), but I think I'm going to scream  :-X

William grew up in the Bedford Street area of St Margaret and has no known connection to Rutland so I hadn't even looked for a marriage outside of the Leicester RD, but I certainly cant rule it out.

Hopefully someone will have the records for All Saints for the right period & can put me out of my misery, but if not then it looks like I'll need to add to my growing collection of CD's / Transcripts as it'll still be cheaper to rule the 1883 ones out that way then to purchase yet more certificates - and of course I always pick the right one last, to the point where I'm thinking of wallpapering the room with them  ::)

PS Thanks for looking too Xin   x

Hi

I have just checked my disc from the LRFHS - the Leicester Borough Marriage Index 1837-1911 and it has William Clark marrying Fanny Goodwin on 6 September 1883 at St Lukes Church. No other details.

If you order the marriage cert from the GRO without entering any vol or page number, entering just the year,  on the second page you can state that the groom's father's name must be Benjamin. That way if it isn't you get a refund.  :)

It looks to me that the marriage is the Dec.1883 one to Fanny Flowers (the Wm to Fanny Goodwin Sept.1883 was actually born Rutland and this pair emigrated to US in 1912 - various trees on ancestry).

Fanny Flowers born Leicester ca.1863 appears in 1871 and 1881 census then no more - so married to William Clarke??  (The other possible William Clark/e marriages to a Fanny showed these women were not born in Leicester as the Fanny of your William was.

Thanks for the replies.  Following the William Clarke who married Fanny Goodwin I see his parents were John & Lucy and as mentioned, he was born in Rutland, so Fanny Flowers certainly seems the most likely suspect although I remain intrigued as to where they married.  For all that my lot lived in St Margaret for around 30-years or more, I haven't found a single baptism or marriage for them there :-\

Many thanks for all the help
