Wolverhampton Marriage - Roden/Aspberry
« on: Thursday 16 July 15 18:15 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have a John Roden marrying Alice Aspberry on 16th July 1740 at St Peter(s), Wolverhampton. It would be appreciated if someone on their next visit to the Staffs RO could look at the entry to see if there are any more details relating to this couple.

Regards,

Barry

Thank you both for your replies.

The Shifnal reference means I may be on the wright track with this couple - need more details about John Roden.

Again, thanks

Hi
I've had a look through St Peter's Wolverhampton to see what else is there.
Burials
John Roden 26.11.1757
John Roden 19.3.1799
No sign of Alice or Margaret or any children at Wolverhampton.

As it turns out and you probably know they are all at Shifnal 1741-1751(all of Shifnal or  butcher or both)
Elizabeth 28.7.1741/4.8.1741
John 5.7.1743/21.7.1743
William 10.9.1745/22.9.1745
Sarah 25.9.1751/14.10.1751
There is also a burial for him there
John Roden butcher was buried May 1st 1773.
Alice buried 3rd June 1796 age 84 years.

There seems to be more than one John Roden in Shifnal -these obviously are a different couple.
Thomas s of John and Elizabeth 8.5.1759 bapt 9th of Stanton
Ann d of John Roden of Stanton buried 12.12.1767 age 5
Christian d of John and Elizabeth of Stanton Farm 6.9.1760 bapt the 8th

There's a baptism John Roden s of Jo Roden of Hinnington? husbandman and Elizabeth his wife was born 1 Feb 1714 and bapt 10th

As for Alice ,this looks like her at Shifnal too.
Alice Aspery d of John Aspery of the parish of Ryton hatter and Catherine born 4.8.1710 and bapt 5th
Sister Elizabeth 2.2.1714/11.2.1714 of Shifnal feltmaker
John 25.11.1718 of Shifnal hatter
Catherine d of Alice Asbury 20.4.1734/23.4.1734 of the Cordwainers Lane
Catherine Asbury buried 18.8.1765
Can't spot John senior

Hope that helps a bit
ps Shropshire archives has a apprenticeship for a William Richards to a John Roden of Hinnington in 1717 may show a bit more.

Hi Ciderdrinker,

Thank you for the details about the Aspery/Asbury family.

So far I can trace the family back to Thomas Roden, butcher of Shifnal and his wife Margaret Swan. When Thomas died in 1798 his age was given as “50” (likely a guess) giving a DOB of c1748.  If John Roden, butcher and Alice were his parents then there is a gap in their children's births where Thomas could fit but it does not explain why he was not baptised in the parish church.

I think I need to visit the Midlands and spent some time in the ROs and libraries to see if I can trace this family's origins further.

Again, thanks
