Craig Church memorial inscription

Hi, I was looking at in the Kirkcudbright MIs book this morning for a family called Melville, (Alexander Melville, Esq, tax collector, c1753 - 1832 and his wife Jean Hunter c1755 - 1829) The stone included what I interpret as their younger son, Hercules Ross Melville, a merchant, born c1786 died in Gibraltar 1814 aged 28 and buried there. Then there's an editor's note "see Angus gravestone inscriptions Vol 2, 4a Craig Churchyard inscription no 14"  Anyone got the book and can shed any light, please?

Can't help with the reference but it looks like Hercules was baptised at Craig -

From the MI booklet:

Hercules Ross esq of Rossie d Rossie Castle 24.12.1816 71, w Henrietta Parish d there 14.6.1511 42, das Harriet d East Sheen 16.12.1822 35 (h Wm Ellice esq), Eliza-Margt d Villa Tansi on Lake Como Italy 23.6.1821 27 (h Laurence Oliphant esq of Condie) and Maria-Georgina d Craig House 16.12.1839 34, by s Horatio (see Jervise ii 386: he was named after the laird of Brotherton through whose influence he was a purser in the Royal Navy during the American war; his fa was Inland Revenue officer long stationed at Johnshaven; see SRO Scottish Excise Dept index for John Ross; Matric Album Glasgow University shows Colin Ross (4s of John Ross formerly in Port Glasgow) matriculated 1754 - this dr Colin Ross went to Germany and was progenitor of the German branch, see Scottish Notes and Queries vol x Oct 1932 "A Scottish Cadet in Germany"; Glasgow honorary burgesses - Hercules Ross esq of the island of Jamaica, 9.10.1782.)
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Brilliant - thank you very much. Discovered two of the Melville children were born in Craig...so the two families were obviously close. More digging needed <g>
