Hi
Presuming Yorkshire had asylums' - roundabout 1870 to 1890 - where would the nearest one to serve Sheffield have been located, and does anyone know if records of inmates still exist please?
thanks

South Yorkshire Asylum, at Middlewood Hospital, Sheffield was certainly in existence between 1878 and 1894 - I have a relation (from the Halifax area) who was admitted in 1878 and who died there in 1894. Her entry is recorded on FindMyPast.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids. They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Mr Wiki has a good article on the asylum, which has now been turned into flats. Not ever so sure I would like to live there
But lovely photographs of lovely buildings.
