My thoughts exactly Spidermonkey.  But I'm too exhausted with the excitement of actually finding the house on the hill that I'm off for a walk to calm down!

Aw bless you!   :-* :-* :D :D :D

Considering where two other pictures have been identified as being located today - perhaps we should check out Hitchin......... ;)

I don't think there are many stone buildings in Hitchin. I think it's much further north.

Old town hall with health centre attached?  I recall being taken 60 years ago, somewhere like that by my mum  to see the health visitors or child health nurses.

Note also the partly pol larded trees.

Can we have a "zoom in"  on the notice board please?

IF  it is a house,  it is possibly a vicarage  or the manse,  or Priests lodgings.

The trees   have been pruned  or Pollarded,  is there any significance in that?

Six chimneys  indicates  it was built about 100 years ago  approximately.

I wondered about a public building of some kind (e.g. Council Offices or Health Centre - which ScouseBoy mentioned) as I can see curtains on the top floor windows but none on the other windows.  That might indicate a caretaker living above the premises???

Good point that,  and very true  for small Rural District Council  or Urban District councils, which were still in existence 42 years ago.

Equally, some schools had caretakers living on the premises.

Or could it be a Registry Office?   Very appropriate for Roots Chat.

The building in the background looks like a church.

Perhaps a good search term would  be  Church, Health Centre, Town hall  next to each other.

Yes.  The building in the middle  does remind me definitely of where I went in the early 1950s  for some NHS  services.    We may have got National Baby milk, and dental treatment?

Is the middle building  an early NHS facility?            Or WRVS   some Government  office quickly built after the war
