Adding DOGS to your family tree history
« on: Wednesday 01 July 15 15:01 BST (UK) »
I am wondering, has anybody added their pets in their family tree? If so, what way did you do it?
I am a HUGE dog lover and I have thought about adding my dogs to the tree in some way.

Any thoughts?

Perhaps in notes attached to each person, or photos.
I am Australian, from all the lands I come (my ancestors, at least!)

Pine/Pyne, Dowdeswell, Kempster, Sando/Sandoe/Sandow, Nancarrow, Hounslow, Youatt, Richardson, Jarmyn, Oxlade, Coad, Kelsey, Crampton, Lindner, Pittaway, and too many others to name.
Devon, Dorset, Gloucs, Cornwall, Warwickshire, Bucks, Oxfordshire, Wilts, Germany, Sweden, and of course London, to name a few.

My mother was given a family history book published by the Mormon church. There are pages for pets, friends, heirlooms, etc. as well as for writing up the history of the family. I have carried on with it since she died. It is very useful as a reference.

Never thought of that but I like the idea. They are so much part of the family and some folks prefer them to humans ::) because they give unconditional love. Why should they not be remembered too down the generations.

Attaching them to a person, with perhaps a photo sounds great. Must try that and see how it works out.

Yeah I would add them in notes or have photos with the owner. I remember there being a thread a while ago about our ancestors pets, so it may be interesting for future generations!  :)

I'm a dog lover, too, but I haven't added any to my tree except their names on a few photos.  And one which deserved special mention in my notes, gg-grandpa's farm dog 'Tig,' who went one-on-one with a dog belonging to a group of neighboring Native Americans and drove him off while gg-grandma stood by ready to defend herself with a hot poker.  I wish I had a picture of Tig.

Maybe you could include them as adopted children?

I have already created detailed notepad files and individual folders for each pet containing photos. I would just like to add the to the Gedcom or something, so yes, maybe adding as a "note" would be ideal.
