1900s LADS CLUB, ANCOATS
« on: Sunday 28 June 15 18:02 BST (UK) »
I have been trying to research a Lads Club that my father and his brothers belonged to from 1920s to 1950s when it closed.  It was called Hugh Oldham Lads club and I believe it was on Livsey Stree, Ancoats.  As a boy he played sport there and was a member of the harriers.  I know the history of how the club came about but I have been trying to trace other members around that time who may have known my father and his family.  I once traced a copy of a black & white minstrel show that he was in but have now lost all trace of it and would love to find it again.  Any information appreciated.

If I recall correctly the club was affiliated to Manchester Grammar School (don't recall the exact tie up).   As a pupil at MGS during WW2 I have 'almost forgotten' memories of attending a couple of functions Hugh Oldham Lads club, a stage show of some kind and a boxing match I think.
Not sure it helps but might add to your knowledge.

Yes, like you whilst doing my research I had come across MGS although I couldn't work out the connection.  The Thorpe Road, Newton Heath ground they used for the sports events holds lots of childhood memories for me when as a child I went every Saturday to the cricket matches played by my dad and his brothers.  I don't remember stage shows so perhaps this is the concert that I'm looking for.  Thanks for your contribution.

Had a quick look at the website you suggested.  I see Brian is quite a bit younger than my Dad and his brothers but it is worth contacting him.  Thanks very much.
