Chapel of Bagby in 1842

I have a marriage certificate from 1842 which states that the marriage took place at the Chapel of Bagby, can anyone tell me which church this would have been please.  I can find info that tells me St Mary's at Bagby was only built in 1862, was this rebuilt then or actually only built then?

According to the National Index of Parish Registers, 1862 is when Bagby Church was rebuilt. It's an ancient church with registers dating back to 1556.

I'm not sure why it was referred to as the Chapel of Bagby, though. Possibly because it is/was a township in the parish of Kirby Knowle, and thought not to be a parish in its own right? But as long as the certificate refers to St Mary's Church or the rites of the Established Church (Church of England), there's little doubt that this is what it will be referring to.

Thank you, it doesn't actually say St Marys on it it just states married at the Chapel of Bagby, I always thought it was St Mary's but as I've been reading more about it recently I wanted to check to make sure it was the church I was thinking it was.

There should be a bit just below the boxes with names etc and above the signatures, pre-printed with "Married according to the rites and ceremonies of" (or words to that effect - I don't have one in front of me), then a space for handwritten input. What's been written there? It should clarify definitively what denomination the chapel belonged to.

GenUKI has this to say:

"BAGBY, in the parish of Kirby Knowle, and wapentake of Birdforth; 4¼ miles S. of Kirby Knowle, 3 miles SE. of Thirsk. Here are two chapels, a Methodist chapel and a Chapel of Ease (see Churches for photograph), of which the rector of Kirby Knowle is curate. Pop. 242."

A Chapel-of-ease is a church that is within a parish, but is NOT a parish church, built for the attendance of those who cannot reach the parish church conveniently.

Yes, Chapel of Bagby has been written in. I'm sure it must have been St Mary's as I have some that were baptised there and I have burials there too.

yes thanks I've seen that and earlier the family are at Kirby Knowle but then moved to Bagby. I've had this certificate 2 years and when I started working on this branch again I just thought well which one was actually Chapel of Bagby.
