What would be the significance  of the unusual base  for the gas light?

Probably a drinking trough for horses.  There was one in Lincoln like that.

That's an interesting tidbit to know...

It's the Catholic Church in Hitchin, Hertfordshire - corner of Nightingale Road and Grove Road.

Great find Richard!  :D :D :D  Did you know it or find it by searching?

Welcome to the Honour Roll!  8) 8) 8)

According to this website the church was built in 1901, opened in January 1902, and the bell tower added around 1904.

"In 1904 a gallery was built at the west end of the church, increasing the seating capacity to about 150. A bell tower was added around the same time."

If I'm reading that link correctly, the church in my photo is now the church hall and the actual church was replaced in the 1970s ?!?

Thanks  Jool, as always, love the background research you are very adept at finding!  :-* :-*

Well done, Richard ... Hitchin twice in the day !

I think this batch may be collections (like the Cromer ones), as there were also two from Bedford, and there are a few others of Liverpool that match (I've identified them though thanks to KGarrard's identification of Liverpool port).  A lot of the photos  look the same as well (as in physical size, quality etc)

Well done Richard. I had got as far as considering catholic churches but was looking Lancs/Cheshire as there seemed to be some similar buildings there.

Jan ;)

I have to confess no particular sleuthing skills on this one - I used to live just round the corner from it - and yes, what was originally the church is now the hall, whilst a modernist church is now attached on the left hand side (as you look at it in the view in this thread).
Still good fun.

It's amazing how many of these photos have a connection to the Rootschatters participating in the WAIs.  The two that I've been connected to have invoked some wonderful memories, so I hope others have the same experience.

Glad you're having fun Richard.  :) :)
