Help with Irish Research

My Great Great Grandfather, John Colvin (1827-1885) married Catherine O'Neill in Lanark, Scotland in June 1852.    They resided in Cambusnethan.   John came from Co Cavan and Elizabeth from Co. Monaghan.   I have been able to trace them from their marriage to the present day.   Now I want to try to get back to his Irish Roots and understand this can be a pretty difficult task so am looking for some help in just where to start.   All I know is that on John's death certificate his father is shown as John Colvin, Farmer, Co. Cavan.

As far as religion is concerned, they were Roman Catholics.   They went on to have a family of at least eight children.  The oldest son (my ggrandfather) was named John and the next son was named Terence.   This may be significant.  John worked as an ironstone miner and as there seem to be several Colvin families in the Cambusnethan area, it may be that they are related.

John's wife was Catherine O'Neill from Co. Monaghan.   I believe her parents were Henry O'Neill and Elizabeth Dounan (not sure of the spelling of the surname) and that she was born in 1933.

Sorry, as you can see, John's wife was Catherine, not Elizabeth.

There's very few Colvin's in Cavan so it might be worth your while doing a trace on Thomas Colvin born around same time as your John though i cant find a marriage for him to Julia possibly Reilly.

Thanks for your reply.   I am not sure if this is one of my Colvins, as going by naming patterns, from John's marriage in 1852 to the present day there is only one Thomas and his name comes from the paternal side of the family.   The Colvin male names from each generation of very large families are John, James, Joseph and Terence.
I have visitors at the moment so can't do much researching presently but once they leave I will take all the information received and try and make sense of what I have.   Fingers crossed!
