Maybe the email we all got sent (after we registered) should include a note of explanation? ;D

I admit to wondering whether the chap who says that if anyone can find a particular person it will be him, uses the fantastic free help given by RootsChatters.     :-\

(the cynic in me coming out)   :)

There certainly have been a few posters in the past who seemed to want all their research done by PM,  rather than publicly (and no,  it wasn't recent/ nor had ancestors who misbehaved.)
I think they were making a fast buck / claiming credit for "our"  research.  Others agreed with me (RC was smaller then)  I  took to refusing any requests by PM.

I've just watched the programme and read the thread. What an amazing story.

I felt though that the programme gave rather the wrong impression of Rootschat, describing it as '...a free internet family finding service......staffed by amateur people finders.....'  :-\

It seems that Rootschat was referred to in exactly the same way on BBC "People Finders" again this morning and there has since been several requests from people to help find living family.

I've felt it was perfectly clear that there was never any question of people likely to be living being involved, either by tracing relatives who may be alive, or giving any information about them ... although if there are enough centenarians there are a few may have crept through!

I'm very grateful for help and guidance so generously given on here, and do try to help out where I can,  ... I do note though that some people ask for help with A & B, ...then their parents & families .... then their parents and families ... nearly back to Adam & Eve, and I get the feeling that they do rely on the wonderful people who help us all here doing EVERYTHING for them, which surely isn't in the spirit of researching your family history, is it? The joy lies in getting a clue and then ... yes, it's possible ... checking it out ... YES! it is ... and now I've got the proof! (Cert etc). I'm still delighted about a problem last year that was solved by a clue pointing me in the right direction, last year.

If someone's being paid a professional fee as a professional researcher, then he/she surely ought to be at least professional enough to mention it, when requesting help ... and let rootschatters decide if they wish to help out?

Honestly...I think most Rootschatters are very respectful/wary of entering into research on possibly living people on the main boards. We get many requests, genuinely connected to the OP/interested connected family member or third parties (proffessional researches maybe?). With few exceptions, we all tend to feel awkward to be discussing people who may still be alive and their details published here. I think this is a strength of RootsChat compared to other forums.

What happens via the private messages (PMs) is ok really. Does not affect the spirit of RC and the interest of genealogy and the truly dead that we research and help others find really... ;)

The programme this morning showed the forum member who helped with the research and referred to her as an amateur people finder.

I'm not at all surprised by the number of posts made by people wanting to find family as a result of the programme today!
