Lindquist - Sweden to Australia
« on: Saturday 09 July 05 13:01 BST (UK) »
My great grandfather - Nils Jakob Lindqvist/Jacob Nicholas Lindquist - was born around 1864, came to Australia as a ship's carpenter in the 1880s and was naturalised in 1909. He died in Victoria in 1947.

We know he came from Norrkoping in Sweden where his father was a teacher but there the information ends. What part of Norrkoping did he come from? Did he have siblings?

Are you able to help?

Christine.

Hi Christine,
I'm guessing you would already have his naturalisation certificate from the National Archives?

www.arkion.se/   is the National Archive of Sweden. The Swedish Censuses (in English!) for 1870, 1880, 1890 and 1900 are online on that site.  Also a register of seamen.

Try also www.genealogylinks.net/europe/swe.htm  - there may be some useful links here.

Hi
An old post here.
I have found a Nils Jakob Lindqvist in Norrköping St Olai. He was born 2 March 1864 to writer Anders Gustaf Lindqvist and Inga Christina Henriksdotter. A writer could be a teacher.
According to the books Nils Jakob was a sailor and left Sweden for America in 1882.

Could this be your man?

Ian

Thanks Ian for responding to my very old posting.

The father matches my records, however his mother differs.

The sailor's record does match the handed down stories.

Hi Christine

Cheers.

Can you write down what you know of his family including his mother's name.

Hi Christine,

I am very sorry but I gave you Anders Gustaf's mother's name (I think). His wife's name was Hilda Charlotta Aurin b. 1819.

Thanks Ian

Hilda Charlotta Aurin is the name I have from a 1890 Swedish Census.

Nils also had a brother Gustaf Albert (b. 16.12.1859) &  sister Agnes (b. 26.1.1861).

I believe that Anders Gustaf Lindquist, their father was a prolific writer of hymns.

Do you know anything regarding that?

Are you able to give me a link to the sailor's database?

Thanks again,

Christine (Great grand daughter of Nils Jacob Lindquist) (Melbourne, Australia)
