Items in Alice's will 1653
« on: Saturday 13 June 15 02:45 BST (UK) »
Can I ask for some help with a few words here please?
The rest of the will is fine – it has been a very nice one to do. One of the few written by a woman, of course, so her ideas of what needs to be included as legacies have varied very much from the usual ‘seven sheep’ or ‘corn on the ground” that the men think important! One of things I’ve enjoyed reading about is all the coloured cloths, rugs and various other textiles she includes.

my daughter my best bedd and boulster belonging thereto one new
chaffe bedd one feather (?)  boulster one paire of of fustian pillows
one paire of blanketts rowed (?) with red one under blankett one
yellow blankett one paire of curtains and vallance of greene
??    ?  one wrought cupboard cloath and two
wrought cushons of bredcloth (?) two litle chayres covered with green
cloath one wicker (?) chayre one warming panne my own lookinge
glasse my litle ?  ?  ?  box the great trunk one
black bond box alsoe half of my lynnens pewter and brasse
one  ? my bible and my best   ?  ? Alsoe half of the
rest of my aparell both lynnen and woollen which shal bee undisposed
att my death Item I give and bequeath unto Mary Burges my daughter”

Many thanks

Maybe:   ...my litle wheele mine owne box...

I think it is:   ...one Cow my bible...

I'm not convinced on fether (the putative t goes a long way under the line) but don't have a better suggestion.

Agree on wicker but sceptical on bredcloth.  It does appear to begin bred____.

The vallans is greene Sempter___ laced or faced, I think.

Thanks for your input horselydown.
I have stumbled across 'sempiternam' on Mr Google - which would make 'everlasting lace'.
A possibility?
I wonder if the 'wheele' was a spinning wheel?

Cheers

Sempiternum (a type of woollen cloth)
"cushions of bredstich" [braid-stitch]
"my best peticoate"

Nice work, Alexander.

A spinning wheel was my interpretation.

I believe on the second line we have 'lesser boulster'.

vv.

Yes, I believe you are right, vv.

The use of "lesser" plays off "best" in the previous line.

Slightly stretched. Don't know if it helps.
