It's just under Whitechapel Road. Have a look at the 'White' of 'White'chapel and Colchester is the street below it:

Thanks Nanny Jan. I thought I had imagined replying to this earlier, or that my reply had not posted correctly.  :(

It appears to have been where Braham Street and Manningtree Streets are today. If you look at a map you can see how the two streets may have at some time joined up. I will try to find a map which shows Colchester St.

See my post #3 for a map :)

Thanks Stan. I already found one (#11) before I saw your link. There were two threads on the same subject which caused a bit of confusion on my part. :)

Dear All

Thanks for the info supplied! Sorry about the duplicate post I thought I'd posted the first question to the wrong forum!!

As to Tina's question, yes John Vorwerg Dobson did die in Liverpool in 1925, however by then (because of the post Franco-Prussian war anti Germanic feelings) he had Anglicised his name to John William Dobson, this happened around 1873-77.

I'm looking forward to my visit back to my roots, it must be the year for it as only four weeks ago I was in Glasgow and visited the house where another set of Great Grandparents married.

Cheers again
