Colchester Street, Whitechapel
« on: Wednesday 03 June 15 10:36 BST (UK) »
I'm from near Liverpool, but my Great Grandfather John Vorwerg Dobson was born at 10, Colchester Street, Whitchapel in 1855.  The street has now disappeared bur appears to have been in the Leman St/ Braham St area, best I can tell it's now got an office tower build on its site,  Any one got an old A-Z or local knowledge can confirm its location and which tower block it's now under?  Asking because I'll be in the East End on Sunday 7th and would like to have a look!

Also would like to look at St Georges German Church in Alie Street, which was connected John Vorwerg Dobson's Step Grandfather, Georg Frederik Vorwerg.

Are the family there in the 1851 and/or 1861 censuses?
If so you can look at the neighbours and  surrounding area to try to get more idea of the location of the street.
There are many old maps of London. The NLS maps are particularly good and can be found via a  google search. Have a look at the maps and if you are can't find the street and no one comes to oir rescue, I will pop back later and try to help.

It appears to be now called Manningtree Street. See http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/sidebyside.cfm#zoom=18&lat=51.5151&lon=-0.0706&layers=163&right=BingHyb which has a map and aerial view as it is now.
Google Aerial https://goo.gl/maps/Yos4k Street View https://goo.gl/maps/CP27A The pub is still there.

There is only the east end still there, it looks as though No.10 would have been in the west end.

It appears to have been where Braham Street and Manningtree Streets are today. If you look at a map you can see how the two streets may have at some time joined up. I will try to find a map which shows Colchester St.
