Just got an email from MS but to be honest it looks likes and upsell of products ''that I cant be without for W10''  ::)

Just a quick paste

When can I upgrade to Windows 10?

We want to give every customer a great upgrade experience, so we’re rolling it out in an organized way to manage high demand and to make sure that the upgrade is right for your device. After July 29, when Windows 10 is ready for your device, it will download in the background. You’ll then get a notification to schedule your upgrade right away or at another time that’s convenient for you.

Then the rest was basically spam

Cortana
Your truly personal digital assistant, Cortana helps you get more done no matter what device you’re on. By learning about you over time, Cortana becomes more useful every day
.

Oh and MS... Aussies are going to call her Cortina. Guaranteed.

A few words of caution

Setting up - the latest iteration of the technical preview is the first with the official set up process for W10. I would advise anyone installing W10 to choose Customized installation rather than Express Installation unless you want to be sending a fair amount of information to MS.

In use - Cortana and various other parts of the "live internet experience" require a constant internet connection which is fine unless you have a data limit imposed by your internet provider.

Falkryn - We used to have unlimited internet, but when we changed to PlusNet my OH decided we didn't need unlimited as we don't play games, download films etc.  Are you saying there is something called Cortana that runs all the time with Windows 10, and if so is it possible to delete/close it?

As I understand it "Cortana" is the equivalent to "Siri" on the IPad/IPhone.

Maybe another 'useless' addon that no one wants or cares about.

Cortana is the "Virtual assistant" which can be part of the Windows set up - it allows you to search both your computer and the internet by basically speaking to your computer to give it instructions. It does not need to be activated.

The main "always active" parts of W10 are similar to Windows 8 Apps such as News email weather etc but again they can be turned off but by default they are switched on from the start. While individually they don't use a lot of data it will add up.

Like Windows 8 W10 trys to get you to log in with a Windows account which gives you access to various MS functions e.g Onedrive online storage but it is possible to sign in with a local account (ie one that is only on your computer) which cuts out much of the online linking.

Thank you Falkryn and Jim.

Falkryn - When I bought this laptop with Windows 8 I didn't have to log in with any e-mail, but when I upgraded to 8.1, Windows suddenly "gave" me a new e-mail address.  I've never used it and it only shows up if I restart the laptop.  I just ignore it and log on with my own password.

Windows 10 is the most widely tested version of Windows ever, given the number of users on the Technical Preview scheme In use I have found it more tolerant of software and hardware than on previous updates.

I don't think there's any danger of your computer not working - the question(s) will be more along the lines of "I used to .......  but it won't work that way now" kind of routine. We all get set in our ways and get a little cranky when our routines are interrupted.

P.S. I've just read an article claiming that Cortana has been programmed to understand British Sarcasm  -  ::)
