I have been using the technical previews for about a year now ... which supplies information to MS about program and hardware conflicts. ( nothing special in that as there at least 1 million users at the moment).

Windows 10 is running on my laptop which was originally a Vista machine which I had upgraded to W7. Performance is better than W7 given the hardware it uses and it has also suported older programs which I had installed on there e.g Office 2000 is not supposed to work (according to MS) but it does. My printer and scanner which required updated drivers on the main machine (W8.1) worked first time with W10.

There have been a number of "strong language sessions" along the way but W10 has continued to improve with each iteration.

However my advice, as always, is that if you are happy with what you have got "leave it" don't feel pressured into change simply for the sake of change.

I've got 8.1 and I've got used to it now, but if 10 is better than I'll probably go for that, no doubt in the future 8.1 will be phased out as so many people dislike it.

The main problem with Windows 8 (and partially 8.1) is that it was designed for Tablet use - on a tablet it is actually quite a good system but MS failed to take into account the fact that most users were sticking to a mouse and keyboard system.
Although every new version of Windows has required some getting used to I personally feel that W8 was a step too far  - Although to be fair at the time of its conception, Tablets with their touch screens were taking the computer world by storm and it was probably considered that desktops would follow the same path.

W10 designers appear to have taken this lesson to heart and given old methods of working a new twist but at the same time leaving them familiar enough that we users will not feel too alienated.

I've still not had the Windows 10 notification, but like most people I'm going to wait a few months before I download it.

I'm not sure if this a sign of things to come but last night my weekly Windows system backup which normally takes 15-30 minutes took 9 hours!  My normal My Documents backup took about 10 minutes so I don't think there was general technical problem with backing up data.

I use Windows backup by the way.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else has recently experienced long backup duration similar to mine.

I'm more worried that if I upgrade to W10 that MS Office, Photoshop, Ancestry, our scanner and printers won't work to name a few programmes and equipment.

I'm sure they will.  When I had to get a new laptop as my other had died, Windows 8 had only just come out and the salesman in a well known PC shop told me that none of my programs would work - of course they all did, as all the suppliers of the programs, RoboForm, Legacy, etc. just upgraded their systems so that they'd work on Windows 8, I'm sure they'll all do the same thing again if necessary - they mustn't be very happy with Microsoft when they keep changing their systems as it costs them money too.

Quick update on availability of Windows 10.
The July date is for release to OEM suppliers, (computer shops etc) for general usage the date looks like end of August/September.
