That doesn't seem to work hallmark.  I have read somewhere that if you have Windows 8.1 and there is a search icon on the page with the apps, then your computer is ready for Windows 10.  I have a search icon but for the life of me can't remember whether it's always been there, or if it's something new.  I rarely go to the apps page, I've got Windows 8.1 to open up on desktop.

After looking further into the failure of the various Kb updates, it looks like Microsoft has withdrawn the 2 updates temporary.

I meant when I tried to reserve/install, I didn't get anywhere, I just kept being taken back to a Microsoft page.

Also if Windows 10 is an free upgrade from 8.1, what about laptops like mine that were Windows 8 when I bought it, but I've already had a free upgrade to 8.1?

My Windows 7 PC automatically placed the icon in the system tray but for some reason my Windows 8.1 laptop did not.

I managed to force the icon to appear using this technical method:-

http://techdows.com/2015/06/how-to-enable-get-windows-10-app-icon-windows-7-or-8-1-taskbar.html

1) I ran the script as the Administrator

2) I then used Method II - using the Task Scheduler to invoke it

It's worth trying if nothing else has worked.

downside - I've tried that, I got the script file called ReserveWindows10.cmd which I have to save in the 'C' drive, which I assume is what 8.1 calls Windows8_OS (C:).  I've now got it in Windows C>Users>Liz, (although it also just shows up under Downloads) but its a CMD file, so how do I now run the file, either with or without the adminstrator prompt?

Sorry to be so dim.

Lizzie

You don't need to run it from a command prompt, just use Windows Explorer to navigate to where the file is located and right click it and select Run As Administrator.  Then a DOS style screen will launch itself and start executing the script.

It get stuff in an infinite loop - in which case just close down the CMD screen using the cross on the top right hand corner.  Then right click the file and select Edit and change the value below from zero to one:-

Code: [Select]
if NOT "%errorlevel%" == "0" ping localhost >nul &goto :CompatCheckRunning
