I have Windows 7 and have got the Windows 10 reminder.

Because I'm technically pretty hopeless,I'm quite worried about how the upgrade will eventually successfully install on my PC - just what action will be required from me?

Once notified that your W10 is available you will need to download it from the link supplied

I'm scared stiff at the prospect of messing up and ending up with nothing working properly.

The update process is automatic once you intiate it but if it cannot install W10 will reinstate your previous version of Windows. W10 is in my experience far more forgiving of older programs and technology than Windows 8 was (as an example my printer/scanner ran perfectly well under W10 which didn't require any driver updates/downloads which W8 did)

Currently my PC is set for Windows to automatically update - will Windows 10 upgrade automatically in the same way once I have downloaded it?

Yes

Also, I like to backup all my files/docs/photos onto a Seagate external hard drive but I'm concerned that it might not be compatible with Windows 10 - or will it still work o.k ?

 shouldn't be any problems

The choice whether to install W10 is up to each individual it is not one that is being forced upon anyone.
In its favour are a few points
a) its free to download and install (for a limited time and if you qualify etc)
b) its actually pretty good at what it does
c) It appears far more tolerant of previously installed software and attached hardware than some previous versions of Windows were.
d) in a Mouse & Keyboard environment it is actually much better than W8 (or 8.1) although it does retain some of the characteristics that W8 users will recognise.

Hi Falkryn, thanks very much for the detailed reply.

You've explained it  really well and I don't feel quite so apprehensive about it now.
I think my best bet is to reserve my Windows 10 upgrade initially but once it has been downloaded at the end of July,I'll wait before installing it until other more competant Rootschatters have installed it and hopefully share their experience with us.

Really appreciate your guidance on this one.

Thanks again.

I've wondered about this Windows 10 'invite' which appeared on my screen.
I've only just got use to 8.1 - and not completely at that!   :'( :'(  :'(

Falkryn are you saying we should bite the bullet and let it take over?

Have you checked Optional Updates, Win7 users aren't getting it as an automatic update?  If its still not there, if you read http://www.rootschat.com/links/01fez/, you probably haven't got the update quoted installed.

My husband uses Win7 and has had an invite to update to Windows 10, however I still haven't received a request and I use Windows 8.1.  I would have thought they would have sent out invites to all Windows 8.1 users before Win7 which hasn't had any problems.

Elitist  ::)

 ;D ;D

I think its more a random Microsoft User freebie. Or it could be based on IP address and 2 in one household would miss out, or MS figure you can transfer from one to another. Not sure

Have a look at the posts on here http://www.rootschat.com/links/01fgm/.  There are several posts on that page and the next one which provide direct links to the patch on Windows Update.  Just need to ensure you download the correct version, although the wrong one shouldn't install.

If you google the KB number, there are quite a few posts about it and the issues getting it downloaded. ;D
