THE LATE JOHN FINLAY, ESQ., J.P.

On Saturday last, the 31st of March, John FINLAY, Esq., J.P., Brackley House, Bawnboy, closed his mortal career in the eightieth year of his age. At the time of his decease, Mr. Finlay was the senior U.P. of the County of Cavan. He was a member of the Grand Jury from the year 1827 till the Spring Assizes of 1870; when in consequence of ill-health he was obliged to retire from the more active duties of public life. He served as High Sheriff of the County Cavan in 1835; and he was Chairman of the Bawnboy Board of Guardians from the death of the late Perrot THORNTON, Esq., until compelled by failing health to retire in 1870. The late Mr. Finlay was a fine specimen of the country gentleman. He resided constantly on his property; a considerate and generous landlord; beloved by his tenantry and by all who had intercourse with him. He was an impartial and painstaking magistrate; faithful and efficient as a Grand Juror, and in the discharge of every public duty. Respected and beloved while living; his memory will long be gratefully and affectionately cherished not only by an attached tenantry but by many of every rank throughout the country.   http://www.irelandoldnews.com/Cavan/1877/APR.html

Hello Everyone . Just catching up. Will take me a little while to sort out the links . Very many thanks for this. sorry I had no hard facts to go on but something of a mystery family as over the years  no one can recall them .

This link gives a location of the Corville house adjacent to the Cor Bog that was owned by  John Finlay, Esquire, in the summer of 1834.

Linked to this family is a Thomas Finlay who was knighted at Dublin Castle March 1837--does anyone know how I can find out what this honour was for . He was High Sheriff in 1836 could that be linked. He was alive in 1862 . Still struggling to find his marriage and death. Discovered even more Finlays in the area than I thought but thanks to your help have made  a good start with this jigsaw.

I notice when I google Sir Thomas Finlay he is " Sir Thomas Finlay of Bawnboy House, Bawnboy"

I found this list of landowners in County Cavan in the  1870's:

It might give further clues as to how the Finlays are linked together

I notice the Francis Finlay you mentioned was the owner of Corville as a minor.

Sir Thomas Finlay owned land Hampstead-road, London, given the families long service as politicians, I would say he was knighted for his work.

Have you looked for Sir Thomas on the English Census, maybe 1861,1871, 1881?

He may have married in England?
