The census of England in 1891 would indicate that my great grandfather, George Dawson, was born in 1862 in Droylsden. I know the FreeBMD indexes don't show parents, just the year someone was born. When George married Emma Howarth on 1-23-1881, he was going by the name George Dawson Brown and listed his father as William Brown. My family heard the story that if changed his name to Brown, he stood to get an inheritance, but that fell apart for some reason and you will see in the 1891 census that he goes by Dawson again and his four boys and Emma also go by Dawson. She was also buried as Dawson. Someone has started a tree in ancestry.com that puts his parents as Issac Dawson (odd spelling of first name) and Eunice Hawthorne. I find no woman by that name except for a couple in the USA. I find one Issac Dawson but his wife goes by another name. Any suggestions as to how I can track down the actual names of George's parents? It seems like there could be something to the Eunice name as George named his only daughter Eunice (she was born by his second wife) and then my grandfather named his first daughter Eunice. But I don't really know. Thank you.

Hi

According to his marriage certificate, George's father, William BROWN, was a collier.

There is this marriage which might be useful..

Marriage Register

Manchester
Lancashire
10th November 1861

William BROWN 22 Bachelor Collier of Daniel Street Bradford Father = William BROWN Collier
Hannah ( or Ann ) DAWSON 19 Spinster of Daniel Street Bradford Father = Isaac DAWSON Butler

Both bride and groom made their marks
Witnesses were Mary TAYLOR who signed and William TAYLOR who made his mark

Cheers

From www.cheshirebmd.org.uk

George DAWSON birth registered in 1861 Audenshaw mother's maiden name  DAWSON

This would have been the correct area for Droylsden

Birth registered July-Aug-Sept 1861 so before the parents married.

Freebmd shows the birth reg for George as Sept 1861 8d 391.

So it's possible that George was born just before William Brown and Hannah Dawson married in Nov 1861.
If this is correct his birth would have been registered as Dawson but he was probably raised with the surname Brown.

Thanks, karenlee, rolnora, heatherjulie.

Heatherjulie, with your last post it would indicate that George’s father used his wife’s maiden name, Dawson, when George was christened. Is that at all normal? Would he have done that to match up with the name that was on George birth certificate in which George has his mother’s maiden name, Dawson?

So, if I am following this all correctly:

1.   George is born to Hannah (Ann) Dawson in September 1861 before she is married.
2.   She marries William Brown in November 10, 1861.
3.   George was christened on Dec  21, 1862 and his father’s name is now shown as being William  Dawson.
4.   George had a sister in 1863 and she had the last name of Brown.

No wonder I have been confused trying to follow George’s life on ancestry.com. It gets easier after the 1891 census which shows him living with wife Emma and four sons. His name is then shown as Dawson.

I would have to assume here that Hannah is marrying the actual father of George. If William Brown is not actually the father, I don’t think I would find out who was his father unless I found a letter somewhere.

To confuse matters a little more, looking at the 1871 England census results, when I put in William Brown with a year of birth around 1839 (based upon his age of 22 during marriage in 1861) with a spouse named Hannah, I don’t find a William and Hannah  living with a child named George. So, perhaps Hannah and William married, but by 1871 she was not living with William. So I thought maybe she is living with her father, Isaac Dawson, in 1871 with her son George, but I am not finding her that way either. When I search on herself as head of household, I don’t find her with George.

Karenlee...where are you finding the marriage certificate for William Brown and Hannah Dawson? I can find index of marriages, but not the actual certificate. Thanks.
