Many thanks for all that information.  I was obviously wrong placing him at home in Heanor in the 1851 census, maybe it was 1841.  I did consider the possibility that he was transported as his record of 14 previous convictions would have made him a prime candidate.  A relative in Australia couldn't find him in their lists and thought the 1850's was a bit late for transportation there.

I have had a search through Trove and whilst there are plenty of Gillot's I cannot see an Abraham.   Nor does anything come up in Papers Past NZ.
One can put in a request at this website - http://findmyhistory.net/transported-convicts/transported_convicts-30/ to see if he is listed in any newspaper.
There was an Abraham Gilliat born Lincs in 1820 who married a Sarah, but this looks like an entirely different family judging by the 1871 census.
There are also many variations in the name, such as Jillot.    Since there were Gillot's in Aisne, France who were Protestants, could this be a Huguenot name?
Otherwise I can only see the deaths of Abraham Gillot in Wortley 1867, Saddleworth 1857 and Worksop 1895.

My latest information when searching Millbank Prison records for 1855 puts him at Portland with Series number HO24.
Can anyone please throw further light upon this mystery?
Thanks.

I hadn't heard of Papers Past NZ, but do have an ancestor who emigrated to NZ.

I have found his wedding write up in the local paper!

Thank you!

Hi Pacaine

Where  have you accessed Milbank Prison Records?

The HO24 reference is a National Archive Reference, re various prison records they hold, however it is not possible to search for individual prisoners on their site you have to visit Kew and go through the records.

When Abraham was sentenced in 1855 he was given 10 years Penal Servitude, after the 1852 and 1857 acts, "Penal Servitude" replaced transportation.  The following site explains:-
http://vcp.e2bn.org/justice/page11360-types-of-punishment-transportation-and-penal-servitude.html

If he had not died, he must have been  a prisoner in 1861 Census.

Did you obtain the full details of the Newspaper article which suggest he was transferred to Millbank?
Just wondered if others were also transferred from Nottingham at the same time, is so it may be possible to find them in 1861 census.

Hi,

Forgot to add that in many prisons 1861 the prisoners were recorded with just their initials.

To see the various results, enter A in Christian name  G in Surname boxes

Enter "Prisoner" in Keyword Box

Gender -Select "Male"

Only possible I can find is :-

HG  born 1819 Derby Derbyshire   in Leicester St. Martin.  When you look at the image he is
a frame work knitter.

Also you need to enter initials other way round i.e.  G  A,  as you can not be sure that the first
initial is christian or surname.

There are pages so perhaps you will have more luck.

Hi,

When you get the information on Find my Past, you can see the actual document (click on camera image) however you have to purchase full membership or credits to be able to do this.

Sorry cannot assist as I do not have membership.

Portland Prison is in Dorset, and would indeed have been "Hard Labour".

Thanks again.  Nottingham to London and then to Dorset - they certainly moved him around quite a bit.
I also have no membership and therefore no access and live a long, long way from Kew:-(
