Missing death record Abraham GILLOT
« on: Wednesday 27 May 15 14:00 BST (UK) »
My gggrandfather Abraham Gillot appears on the 1851 census in Heanor Derbyshire, but his wife Sarah is shown as a widow in 1861.  I can find no record of a death in that period. There is a conviction for counterfeiting in March 1852 (he was a serial offender), but nothing else I can find.
Any ideas gratefully received.

No birthyear or birthplace given in your post and I can't find the 1851 entry you mention but there is one in Heanor for a John & Sarah Gillott

The only 1861 with Sarah as a widow also has 4 children - Ann, Joseph, Mary & George.  The 1851 for that family does not show Abraham in the household but does show Sarah as married

Hi,

Just wondered if this was Abraham Gillott in 1851 Census Nottingham St. Mary
Piece    2133
Folio    9
Page No.10

He is listed as Abraham Chllott born 1820 Heanor, married.  A prisioner in Nottingham St. Mary.

The name has been transcribed incorrectly, it does say Gillott.   Immediately above him is a Joseph
transcribed as Elliott also born Heanor.

So where was his wife Sarah - more information required, her age, place of birth any known
children.

Hi,

Yes the christening you found giving Father for Abraham as Samuel does match with the
Marriage in Duffield i.e.

Abraham Gillott = Sarah Bullock   3rd June 1838 which states at the time of Marriage they
were both resident in Belper Derbyshire, Bat. and Spinster both of full age. Occ Framework Knitter
Fathers - Samuel Gillott
               Richard Bullock

However to save others lots of searching, can you state where Sarah was born, and where she
was living on the Census you have found.

Abraham's last entry in the criminal regisetrs was in 1855, Nottingham - 10 yrs for felony (charged with housebreaking). There's a death of an abraham Gillett registered in Saddleworth in Q4 1857 (Vol 9a, p165) if he did die before 1861, rather than Sarah just having enough and saying he was dead

Have just fuond a newspaper article that suggests trhe man convicted in 1855 was transferred to Millbank prison, London shortly after his conviction.

Might he have been transported?
