Windows updates for May

Sorry to advise, may need to connect laptops to power supply to complete this months updates!
Just done 1 of 3 laptops (windows 7) half hour from start to finish to complete 17updates, I have seen paint dry quicker.
Suggest you all pick a time when it's quiet, like lunch/supper time when updates are installed.

We quite often find one of the Windows updates takes forever.
That is why we never install updates at the begining of a session

Yes most of the ones i get take a while, one of them in particular .

I find it amusing (if that is the right word  ) that one particular MS packet (NetFrameworks) was about 50 MB big when it was introduced, and since then, there have been several hundred MB in updates !!

Like, you buy a new car, and then the manufacturers send you the equivalent of 5 cars worth of updated bits and pieces, just to keep it on the road

When I switch off my computer at work, I sometimes get a message
"Updates being loaded, do not switch off your computer"

So I don't, I just leave it and go home. The computer switches itself off after the updates are finished, but when I switch it on again the next day ...

"Updates are being installed 1 of ..... "
and then it's just "abwarten und Tee trinken !" as the saying (here) goes !

I always check what updates are "ready for download".

Why do I need an update for Silverlight, when I don't use Silverlight?
Ditto Internet Exploder?
Ditto .Net?

Do I really need Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, when I already use an anti-virus program?

De-selecting the 9 updates for the above, saves me 86.9 MB!

Website developers use Silverlight to render websites for use on various operating systems and browsers so you need it to view these sites properly.  It's often used for video streaming so if you don't use NetFlix, itvPlayer, Amazon etc. you probably don't need it.

.Net is required by some programs and is usually installed by a program that needs it.  So it's debatable whether you need to keep applying updates after installation unless your program itself is updated... 

Some aspects of Internet Explorer are used by some programs e.g. checking you have a valid licence, security etc.

Hi All,
        There was once a time, not so long ago, when Microsoft Updates were patches for their software. As Bob pointed out they no longer patch anything, preferring to replace altogether IE, .Net framework files etc. Very annoying if you are like me on restricted traffic each month.

I've previously  moaned about .Net on RootsChat as I didn't think I used it anywhere but having had a problem with AVG antivirus I found that uses it as does Family Tree Analyser (G**gl* it) so I can't now eliminate .Net as I'd like. Thanks Brian for the tip about SatNav. Any more user applications known to RootsChatters I wonder?
