I saw a couple of John Donovans in 1841 who were weavers living in Manchester.
1851 shows Ann born Manchester but Margaret as Wigan which is odd.
What about later censuses for Ann?

There is also quite a gap between Ann and the next child, Margaret. This could often indicate a second marriage but you have the Mannion name for Ann and Nicholas, which seems to confirm that it us the same mother.

I have not been able to trace Ann in any further records after the 1851 census.

The gap between the areas and birth of the two children is odd and a second marriage did not occur to me.  However if the misspelling of Dunevin in 1841 census changing to Donovan in 1851 surely makes this unlikely.

The parents John and Margaret in 1851 only show Ann and Margaret as their children.  But by my calculations my Grandfather definitely Nicholas born 06.05.1851 to a John and Margaret was born two months after it was taken.

I just hope I havn't been tracing the wrong family tree.

Yes, 1841 does seem to link to 1851.
1851 has the family in Style Street - does that fit with Nicholas' birth address?

There is a possibility for Margaret in 1881, a pauper inmate in Crumpsall workhouse.   Margaret Donnevan b Wigan.

1867 Nicholas Donnavan marries Elizabeth Smith - address Henry Street.
1871 he is described as Michael Donnaven - still Henry Street living with Elizabeth's mother.

So they are linked.

There is no sign of the Donovans in 1861.

Style Street does match Nicholas' birth address and I think he was wandering the streets or in a children's home around 1861 so that would account for not being on the 1861 census.
The other dates - 1867 wedding and 1871 census I  know are correct.
I wasn't aware of Margaret Donnevan's workhouse information in 1881 and will certainly follow that up.

Apart from all this can you think of any way I can find out if there is any connection between her maiden name being Manion and the family she was with being called Manning in the 1841?  I am desperate to know!

Hello again,
I can only think of checking with Wigan archives re RC records for the time.
It does seem to fit well but just no real proof for you!
