Deciphering Marriage of David Dundas
« on: Monday 11 May 15 04:04 BST (UK) »
Hi all

I am having trouble deciphering some words from this marriage I have cropped off as much as I can.
What I can understand is David Dundas ? ? and Elizabeth Wood daughter of Dealer (I think it's dealer?) John Wood of ? ? ? S E could the words be South Edinburgh?
Hope someone can fill in the blanks for me.

"David Dundas merd burges and Eliz: Wood daughter to the Deceast John Wood of Blacklaws(?) now in SE."

merd burges = merchant burgess
deceast = deceased

Thank you Alexander for helping me.
I am on the correct track and do have the right marriage of my Mary Dundas's parents.

Now to find out where Blacklaws? Or a similar word and place in Scotland.

The extract is from a parish register - do you know which parish?  That would be a big help as there are a number of Blacklaws in Scotland.

Hi,
I've been hunting for Blacklaw(s) and found a reference to a Blacklaw in Fifeshire with no information but there's another west of Glasgow, near Paisley.  Found the last one in an old reference book in the National Library of Scotland "up the river on the north syd 1m. above Swynstie is Blacklaw, a great hill, the springs not far far it. Southeast frae Blacklaw 1m is Carnehill at the head of the river Anok whilk river cums out of the black loch".  I also checked out old parish names but nothing came up for Blacklaw(s).  It could be an estate.  Good luck with your further hunting.

Hi gilmorg

I have found a Blacklaws in perthshire in Scotland as well.
So I wonder if the Wood family left their area for Edinburgh which is where Elizabeth Wood married her David Dundas?
Next I might have to try and find the death of John Wood and the Baptism of Elizabeth around the Blacklaws or surrounding areas.
Still find these Scots hard to unravel! Lol
Will look up those areas you mentioned.
