Thanks for all the information Gortonboy, it all lines up and makes sense, still leaves the mystery of why he signed up in Canada claiming to be a sailor.

The males seemed all keen to be in the army at any opportunity, I wonder if it was a long standing family tradition?

This leaf of the my tree is there because it contains my mothers cousin, I can go back to the CSM Douglas, but cannot work out his parents and hence the link over to the unknown father of Thomas Phythian in my line.

Don't suppose the military records you have show the next generation up?

Douglas Phythian senior gives his next of kin as his wife Mary Louisa,,,,however above that,,crossed out..it says Uncle Douglas Phythian,  and what looks like   Montana,Utah.

Nothing springs out of Ancestry, but certainly an interesting lead, I shall have to get a look at the docs to see if I can decipher it, there is at least one Montana in Utah, but nothing large.
