Hi Canadagal

Last time I was at the Records Office in Edinburgh I did some research on Alexander Gibson of Glencrosh, the tenant of Gilchristland farm, wondering if he might tie in to my family - no links so far though!

He died on 15 December 1851 and in his will left bequests to the surviving children of his deceased siblings Robert, Ann, Margaret, Sarah and Elizabeth. Robert's daughter was Mary Gibson McTurk. Wonder if any of these names coincide with children of the Alexander Gibson you are looking for?

Incidentally, I was looking for my 3x gt grandfather Alexander Gibson who was a farmer, married in Closeburn in 1793 to Ann Brown. Still haven't tracked him down!

Hi Canadagal,

I am a Canada gal too, and have been since I immigrated from Scotland as a child. My great grandmother, on my father's side, came from Dumfriesshire. Jane MATHISON (1857 - 1948) was born at Glencairn to James MATHISON and Mary LAIDLAW. James had a sister, Janet MATHISON b. abt. 1833, who married a James GIBSON (b. abt. 1819) in Caerlaverock in 1857. I believe James GIBSON was a merchant of some sort and had a shop in the town of Dumfries. This couple are still to be found on all census in Caerlaverock from 1861 - 1901. Any relation?
