If you have a date of birth but not a name - can records be searched
« on: Wednesday 29 April 15 20:27 BST (UK) »
I believe I may have found the date of birth of my grandfather who seems to have changed his name.

Can birth records for NSW be rearched for a specific date detailing all born on that date?

Cheers

Simple answer NO..You need at least a surname or using the wide search something like (S*) for SMITH will return every name beginning with "S"

The same for Given names.

Births are only searchable for the time up to 100 years ago. EG as of today the 29th April 1915.

Thanks for that - the date is well over 100 -  probably 12 January 1883 -  where do I search?

Cheers

My grgrandmother changed her first and second name. For years we could not find her marriage to grgrandad or her birth. (Evidently she hated her long old fashioned name and modernised it)

Eventually we found them all in the BDM and a 'unknown' marriage.

I searched for suspected birth surnames and then I was able  to talk to decendants of her sisters and brothers to confirm that she married the man from the 'unknown' marriage and what her very first birthname was. Evidence was found in the letters she mailed to family.

The fact that you are dealing with a smaller area like NSW BDM should help.

I'd also check trove to see if his real name is mentioned as an alias.
Wemyss/Crombie/Laing/Blyth (West Wemyss)
Givens/Normand (Dysart)
Clark/Lister (Dysart)
Wilkinson/Simson (Kettle or Kettlehill)

Hi Don,     Is this your elusive chap, with surname starting with "L" ..... if so, then NSW BDM online may just be able to help, but it could let you down yet again.

The search box at NSW BDM has recently been upgraded.    I will do some 'trial' runs and come back to your thread shortly.   Hopefully with some new tips for achieving your quest.

Cheers,  JM

 :)
Select births, and accept the default option "no" re the search by reference no.

Use the wildcard option for the surname.
So use the asterisk  (uppercase 8 on standard keyboards)

do NOT enter any other options re names

Scroll down to Date of Event
from and enter 11 01 1883
to and enter 13 01 1883
(notice it does not like entering same date at both options)

THEN if that does not turn up any likely results, consider that the birth registration has perhaps not been included in the online index.

ADD
NSW BDM online allows you to select a heading on those results and re-sort to that heading....  so you could select Armidale or Newcastle  :) after obtaining all the births registered at the Head Office of the NSW Registrar General  :)  (Don't forget that in 1883 that births were registered locally and the deputy BDM registrar was meant to forward those registrations quarterly to Sydney HQ and that there was no formal regulations ensuring that quarterly process actually occurred until after WWI ! )

Cheers,  JM

Of course you can ;D

Put an asterisk (wildcard for NSW BMD *) in all empty boxes, surname given name etc right down the list.
Enter 1883 in both the date from and date to boxes and click search.
That will give you the entire years births.
