"Word of Mouth" on Radio 4

Hi,

    I've just listened to the BBC Radio programme "Word of Mouth". This is normally quite entertaining and interesting but this edition might be of more than usual interest to RootsChatters as it dealt with family relationships and language in both U.K. and North America.

The repeat is due on the air at 11.30pm next Monday night but will be available on the iPlayer I believe for another month.

I listened with interest. Perhaps we should re-introduce the anglo Saxons words that differentiated between maternal and paternal aunts and uncles!

Yes, I thought that was a useful idea too!

Just a reminder for those as absent-minded as me that the repeat of this programme is tonight at 11.30pm on BBC Radio 4. Why they insist on putting broadcast and repeat on at times when normal (working) people struggle to catch them eludes me.  ::)

Yes, an interesting programme, sets you wondering a lot about relationship terms, and how our languages have developed. It's often interesting.
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

I take it TY that you heard that edition on-line? I think I heard them say that all editions are now "permanently" available on-line these days.

I download lots of radio 4 programmes as podcasts - just done it for this one - and therefore have a constant source of programmes that interest me to listen to at any time.
Did the garden last weekend listening to a series of Science Now programmes.  :)
