Rev. William Truss
« on: Thursday 23 April 15 14:46 BST (UK) »
Trying to find any information about William Nicholas Truss.  He was born in Reading approximately 1835. He went on to become the chaplain of Knutsford prison, Cheshire. I am trying to find a connection between him and the Truss family already living in Chester. I have been given some old family papers that seem to suggest they are related but I am at a loss at the moment.
Thank you
Les

Have you tried to find a possible birth for William, and, if so, where have you looked?

Father's name from marriage certificate?

He is in a private tree on ancestry, as having been born in 1834 in St Giles, Reading, Berkshire.

Contact the tree owner, if they are willing to share?

He was a Cambridge Alumni
The write up attached to that says he was born Reading, 1834, son of Thomas Nicholas Truss.

So the 1841 census in first reply looks likely. He can be found on other censuses too, plus probate index.

In 1851 William himself is a pupil at a school in Somerset.

And the Catherine from 1841 is also at a school locally.

There is only one Truss family I can see back in Reading , so it looks as if this is father, Thomas, probably with a second wife, unless Mary is known as Elizabeth or vice versa. Change of occupation too, so a few questions

Thomas 50 shoemaker bn Falmouth Cornwall
Elizabeth 48 bn Bucks
Maria 21
Charles 17
Betsy 15
Ann 12
Thomas 8
Susan 5

All other children bn Reading

No - that is a different Thomas!!! (Who dies in 1870 in Reading)

Thomas Nicholas Truss died 1850 in Reading.  Thus not on 1851.

Thanks to you all. I am going to send for his marriage certificate.  He married in 1856 at Chepstow.
Shall carry on looking for the connection to my Truss family in Chester.
Thanks
Les
